Perhaps we need the "badges" posted on the ocean in a similar way to "ice gates" so that as we sail around, we can pass over a given badge and collect that one, which is then added to one's profile.

Thank you for so much for all that you have done for us. How wonderful it is that we can get to know someone and chat and work on projects with out having to meet in person.

I don't think so because sometimes the distance covered in each hour can vary significantly, whether one is sailing CC or TWA.

Yes indeed sailing on Panacea a Stewart 34 in the Short Haul division. All boats are 2 handed.

On crew.org.nz I also run results for the
"OLD FARTS" competition. I add the ages of the two crew members + four times the age of the yacht and from the average ages, make an adjusting OLD FARTS factor that is then applied to the TCF result and then adjusted for the 3 different race lengths over all who enter on crew.org.nz.

The aim is to see if young brash people who hoist spinnakers and do massive wipeouts, broaches etc are better than the older sailors who are more considerate of their advancing years and practice seamanship.

There is also a "His & Hers" division and last year one "Hers & Hers" yacht. Another prize was for the greatest fantastic, frightening, fabulous or just
f*%#ing muckup!!

At stake for 1st places in individual races and overall results were TWO bottles of Mt Gay Silver Rum with TWO bottles of Mt Gay Eclipse Rum for 2nds & 3rds, and a certificate per boat.

Can't have skippers drinking alone can we?????

All rum was gratefully recieved!!!!!!!
I even one one bottle myself!!

This year I plan to have:
a certificate for each crew member

as well as more rum . . . hic

Raced on Saturday with Graham Kendall who last year IRL solo sailed the NW passage. If you are stuck for place names and details, he "IS" the experienced man to ask.

Thanks Rod. No I did knot know that about Blyth.
Actually my mother was a Kennedy and although born in White Plains, New York is knot directly related to the US political ones, perhaps distantly in the past in Ireland.

Yet again SoL has interesting discoveries.

Congrats Scotsman.

Pondering . . . .
Another twist / aspect to consider.
This was named as a "Viking RAID".

Seeing the enemy raiders approach at 1.9 knots must of given the inhabitants lots of time to get scared and prepare defences, hide treasure, store water and food and arms in their defence stronghold / keep / fort etc.

I have adopted another strategy. I have camped well south, rested my men after all that rowing and head winds and waited for favourable winds so that I can "ATTACK AT FULL SPEED" of 10 knots giving the inhabitants very little time to prepare to defend themselves.

Perhaps another aspect could be developed in SoL to reflect this type of strategy so that the winner is the boat after a long journey over the North Sea, can still "attack" at the highest speed from outside a 50nm circle of the finish.
Both camping ashore or anchoring off could be valid strategy choices.

Noting like a good meal and long sleep before a good fight and a hard days raping and piliging. Ahhhaarrrrr!!

Having a variety of polars IMHO is really great. The rowing aspect adds another dimension of possibilities to consider.

If we only raced sloops, with good windward pointing and speed and even thereafter, all races will soon become boring.

The challange of sailing in different boats in different parts of the world is one major factor that makes SoL such an interesting event. The historical aspects of the longships and the youtube 4 part Viking Voyages was very interesting and enjoyable.

In the past, racing against the tall ships was equally fascinating, especially with live vidcams of the harbour(s) and starts.

So a BIG THANKS to all who add aspects to the SoL experience.
