Thanks to all who participated in the race! The Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club was thrilled to sponsor this year's race to kickoff the club's 150th Anniversary Celebration. We realize that the hour was late for Europeans, and the winds were lighter than we would have preferred, but it was a fun event for us - see our race day photos at http://www.nnyc.org/online-race and Sailonline gained several new "SOLers" as well as several new SYC members. Watch for NNYC boats in future SOL races.

    Hello SOLers!

Here is a Lake Winnebago chart, in case you would like to use it for the race:

    http://lake-link.com/lakes/lake.cfm?LakeID=1490&View=Lake_Map

If the chart doesn't work well for you, feel free to "google" Lake Winnebago and find other images.

    Hello,

I am pleased to announce on behalf of the NNYC board of directors that the winner of the Lake Winnebago NNYC 150th Anniversary Race will be awarded a T-Shirt and other goodies from the NNYC Ship's Store - http://www.nnyc.org/store

Tune those rigs and get ready for another great SOL race on Lake Winnebago. Watch for NNYC boats along the way, and if we pass you, keep in mind that the lake is frozen right now, and we have skates on our keels :)

    Good Luck SOLers!

Derek (Note: zowee is now NNYC Scooter)

    Hi A2R,

Thanks for the feedback :) We added some waypoints that mark the two most prominent shallows on the lake, so the course is very true to how one would navigate the lake.

Indeed, Lake Winnebago was regarded as one of the oldest and most famous inland lake venues in the US. We at the NNYC are thrilled to sponsor this race in honor of our sesquicentenial (150th) anniversary. See you on the lake :)

    Hello Joanne,

I somehow didn't save correctly, and the waypoints, start and finish lines were lost. I have now saved it correctly, and attached the updated course map.

This course is different than prior Lake Winnebago races. The start/Finish is Neenah, where NNYC is located. Also I have included a description of the NNYC 150th anniversary and a link to the NNYC archive in the route description. It would be really nice to have this description used on the SOL Races area so that people can see the link and get the full experience of the event.

    Thanks!

    Derek/Zowee

    Hello All,

Here is the design for the 2014 Lake Winnebago Race, which is designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club. The race will start at the entrance to Neenah harbor, and will circuit the lake, returning to finish at Neenah.

Please join NNYC club members who will be new to SOL, along with long time SOLers Bgosh, Amateur Knight and Zowee as we complete this annual race on their home waters, and help to celebrate this landmark event!

Hi John. I am very interested, if the dates work. I live in the midwest, but I travel to New England several times a year, and would plan a trip around this event. My yacht club will be celebrating its' 150th anniversary, and as a club officer, that will block some dates. I look forward to hearing more about the dates and plan. I'd be thrilled to sail on any of the 12s, although Intrepid has been my favorite since she was competing in the AC back in the 70's.

    Board » General Discussion
Hi SOLers. Due partly to my ineptitude, SOL didn't track along with the Mac this year. I was aboard Drumbeat in Section 7. We were about 5 mi SW of the tragedy location. Our instruments measured well over 50kts and the wind came up very quickly - like being hit by a wall. Many other distress calls rang out on the radio, but the calls from Sociable, who rescued 6 crew from WingNuts was the major focus, as other boats in the area stopped to look for the two lost sailors. Needless to say, it was a somber spirit at Mackinac Island after the race, as many knew the sailors or at least the boat from past Macs. R.I.P Mark Morley and Suzanne Bickel.

As I mentioned, someone in the RC would need to be available to set the windward (and gybe) marks prior to the start of the race. It would not be practical to manage a course change during the race, however.

To handle the problem of overlapped legs you simply place multiple marks at the same location.

It's not a perfect solution, but would be fun to try some time.

BTW news, I attended several AC 12M races in Newport, and was somewhat of an AC groupie back in the 70's and early 80's when you could walk right up to see the boats at the dock or on lifts.

Joanne's Test Race Zone

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!
