To show some love for the Dutch explorer, we could recreate his most famous voyage. We sail from Van Diemen's Land to South America. Probably.

Start: North Bay, Van Diemen's Land
Finish: Staten Landt, Argentinia(?)

Distance: 1042nm
Boat: Maybe Steinlager, or something slower.
Time: Early December would be historical.

Further instructions: Good old Abe reports that he almost died. Well then.

Interpolation in space is simple bilinear. In time is a 'shape function', apparently 3*t^2-2*t^3. So you get
v(19:00)=.26*v(18:00)+.74*v(21:00)

For the polar use the 'detailed csv', where TWS interpolation is again linear. Not sure about TWA, but it's 1 degree resolution, *shrug*.

Re boundary, I race for the most wind, which clearly calls for south. That said the projected route has shortened since Tuesday so it's less of an issue now. I will probably stay close to the 34th, OTOH I expect someone to set a start DC and hit the boundary before euro daylight.

Re wx, I'm not asking for hi res, just the normal GFS 0.5. I think higher resolution is always better, bandwidth permitting.

Re start, I think it's bad that an open water race can be lost in the first 0.3% of it's distance. I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I skip races if the start is too hard. And to be clear, at this point I enjoy this type of race the most.

Hi!
For the Sydney - Mooloolaba race I'd like to request that
1. The race area be expanded to 37S
2. The wx area be trimmed in exchange for better resolution. At least to 0.5 degree, maybe .25 if the math works out.
3. Maybe move the start a little outside the harbor. You know it's like 2am outlaw time...

Setting aside that DTF would be calculated to Mauritius, and his VMC should indeed be positive...

Setting aside that he probably won't touch Mauritius, and his true VMC towards Musandam is close to zero... (but I'm merely a casual observer and may be horribly wrong on the matter)

Setting aside that DTF and by extension VMC is a big joke... (but of course no better deterministic ranking system exists)

I find it amusing how some SOLers, celebrated winners even, manage to gain DTF at greater than boatspeed.

I thought about this long and hard, and I'm going to step on people's toes anyway with an honest answer, so be warned...
1. It is safe to assume that the consistent winners are good in every phase of the game, including the skill to come up with very good SOTP routes. In that regard the router debates are always somewhat insulting.
2. It's a given that routers offer a competitve advantage, that said the real gain is in time spent. Which you want to minimize in a multi week race. The difference between good SOTP and true optimum route is bound to be trumped by wx "luck" by orders of magnitude.
3. When I started in SOL my goal wasn't winning but to come up with sensible routes. It seems to me that people who whine about routers often fail that standard.
4. While some good info is out there, I'm not aware of any good and comprehensive routing tutorial. This should be fixed.
5. The need to do 5 million little course changes per race is a problem. Allowing the server to take VMC commands could be a way to level the playing field, although I'm ambivalent on the matter.
6. People have in the past suggested to reward online time in some form. (in the form of micro randomised wx or whatever). A horrible idea that would drive me to either look at automation or quit SOL altogether.
7. IMO the powers that be need to have a hard look at race design. I think that much of the supposed SOTP friendly design is not working. Ocean races are the most popular, one should put more emphasis on medium length events along the lines of Sail Fiji or S2H. Easier start/finish layouts would be nice too.

Lastly am I the only one who thinks the F1 comparision is silly? Maybe the series has changed since I last watched, for the worse I'm sure. Back when 2 drivers would sweep all races in a given season. Good times.

Pre race stuff...
First order of business is some much needed sleep, missing any wx updates is not allowed in the southern ocean.

Second is to get an idea where the current weather systems are, I am using zygrib and sat images.

Third is to check on previous races, this suggests going NE early on, also a late start may be useful*.

Routing is problematic because BWR cannot handle the dateline. With both sol and zygrib gribs, I have done routes from 'point X' to Cape Horn to get a feel for the race. unfortunately 'point X' is about 36h away from the start, confidence level zero.
Routes to CH will continue thru the entire race.

The coastal part in NZL is mostly ignored except for some rough time estimates. An all-nighter may be necessary
Also ignored is whatever happens after CH. This will be addressed with maybe 3-4 days to go.

Beyond that this will be an easy race, just keep up with the low pressure systems, by means of going very fast. Very very very fast. Redshift inducing fast even

A few more points...
a) A penalty system is more trouble than it's worth. Does anyone think it's OK if I do a 360 or two and take the podium?

b) really how does anyone know I didn't just point at the little island (I did) and then forget to steer in time (well OK, NO)

c) of course none of this would have happened on the high res map. Dunno about the server cost, but that would be a good place to start. Realism and all.

d) while we're at it please fix the performance mechanics for high speed gybes, that is a much worse and common exploit!

e) my jump in NZL was more as a joke, i would be surprised if that was worth 5 seconds. Also funny how no one warned me before the island...

I disagree! In real life jumps are policed by cold hard rocks!! As long as the server allows it doing these jumps is just human nature!!!

(Besides 'track intersects coast' should be easy to code. 'position is on land' gives me a headache just thinking about it.)

1) I 100% agree. Going close to a mark is very common, so special attention is needed. (for the record I would have ended the race in Muskat)

2) Been there, done that. Whole different can of worms.

3) "Wow I jumped?! I was away all day on a business trip and didn't notice."
