    Hi all ;)

    We at ITA_2011 have a small gift for you all . ;)

    Gilles and I promised to ourselves that if we won the Tall ship race steering the Italian Navy Amerigo Vespucci school ship we would have tried to post a couple of pictures taken last year in fall in Venice , when Gil and I met and visited the Vespucci together . One of the pics shows Gil and I in front of the steering room , that we used succesfully during the past 48 hours ;) ;)
    Andrea , aka ita10267 , was not with us in Venice , so we will pretend that when the pic was taken he was in the planning room depicting our race strategy . Antonio , aka ghibli and invaluable fourth member of team Italy was on leave this time , so we will pretend that he was permanently in the cellar drinking his usual tons of beer ;););)

    Sorry Aaron,
    I cited your tools just because they extend weather routing capabilities. It was not intended to diminish your efforts which I really appreciate because they resemble, in a cleaner way, many things that are on my TODO list ;)

    But again I wish that we do all the efforts to make everyone feel that SOL is fair to everyone. If this means two classes....


    PS: all the steering should be limited by the integer degree, CC/TWA DC or not.

    Good to hear some comments.
    My point is the following:

    - It is not possible to forbid software routing.

    As a developer of routing software I see all the possibilities that are opening. The worst of all is the capability of coding a fully automated pilot which can steer on bearings from WPs just as we do. Believe me, this is possible with a little effort and the latest development in available tools is pointing in that directions.

    At that point we will have many BOTs sailing and we'll get plenty of sleep.

    76T suggestion of removing Brainaid grip is unfortunately useless. SOL wx, for most races, is derived from GFS model interpolated on a different grid. Removing the grib file will just give advantage to the number of people who can download data directly from NOAA and interpolate it on SOL grid. Moreover SOL wx is fully avaliable as xml file downloaded by the client.

    The best options that comes to my mind is still a limited number of DCs available. Maybe in the 10-20 range in between updates. So you can have closely spaced DCs around landmass but still is will limit the autopilot feature (at least it will make it more difficult).

    Finally, I really do not see why we should not limit the accuracy of steering to the first integer degree. It will not affect the possibility of going around landmass with a decent accuracy.

    I also would point out that it happened at a point were all the results were clear. But again, by bad.

    nice surprise this morning to find that the killing of last night race moved me from 2 to 31 in SYC ranking ....;)

    No big deal of course , but perhaps in future there should be a way of canceling a race , also as far as SYC points are concerned ....;)

    At the end of the recent Asian sprint leg 1 it came clear through an outburst of complaints in chat that a sizeable part of the SOL Comunity is not prepared to trust the correct application of the rules ITA_2011 team syndicate had given to themselves. In particular it was felt as unfair that two Italian boats were leading to victory , one being the syndicate one . Explaining that the two boats were steered by two skippers who fought against each other for two days was not sufficient for some.

    This led us within the ITA team to revise some of our rules , in order to accommodate the need of that part of the Community who can only trust facts and not Yachtsmen words.

    This threads to inform all Solers of the changes we are going to adopt with immediate effect :

    --- Boat ITA_2011 will participate ONLY to races classified as OCEAN , and when ITA_2011 is in the water ALL the 4 individual historical boats of the team will NOT race. Only transitional exception to this rule will be the finishing of Global Challenge ( legs 3-4-5-6) by Gilles , who will continue in the series doing his own race in a total solo mode ( this still needs to be trusted, but only for a limited amount of time )

    --- In ALL other races if one or more of the original individual boats is in the water , then ITA_2011 will NOT race. If none of the individual boats is in the race ITA_2011 MIGHT be racing.

    --- As summarizing rule in each and every race there will be EITHER ITA_2011 …OR one or more of the individual historical boats of our team.

    --- The 4 individual boats of ITA syndicate are : ita10267 – Gilles – Ghibli – WINSTON_4.

    We trust that by adopting these changes we have accommodated all the remaining needs of that part of the Community who expressed concern and dissatisfaction at the end of Asian sprint 1 , as much as we trust that there will be no more space from now on for lack of trust and doubt of fairness that some members of the Community have explicitly affirmed in that occasion . Should anybody be still unhappy , the only remaining possibility for us to accommodate their needs would be to SINK our boats …and the decision in that respect is …..NO !! ;)

Joanne's Test Race Zone

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Marstrand to Cowes 2025


We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025


Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
