On a small scale (where your course is straight and others' bent) I distinguish between two changes in wind: changes over time (windshift/wind picking up/wind decreasing) and changes over space (wind gradient).
- For changes over time, I use VMC to steer my boat. If the wind does not change over space but only over time, then this is the fastest way. You just need to find out the bearing to use for VMC, but without changes over space, this bearing will remain constant (until the next waypoint). Have a look at outlaw's post on solfans
- For changes over space, it's harder to come up with a strategy that is always optimal and easy to apply (not counting using routing software). Imagine your waypoint is straight ahead, to the left of you the wind is better and to the right of you the wind is worse. Now starting off slightly to the left and bending slowly to the right is faster than a straight line, because the bendy line is barely any distance, but does mean you sail in better winds. But when you make you sail a line that is too bent, you sail a lot of extra distance that you can't make up with the better wind you have.

Then there is also the "rule" of making course changes larger than a couple of degrees:
only make a course change larger than 3 degrees (or 2, or 5 if you don't need to squeeze out some seconds) if:
- you're rounding a mark
- you're rounding a landmass
- you're tacking/gybing, or hopping some other dent in the polar
- the new wx update forces you to pick a different route
- you admit you made a mistake in your last course and need to change course as soon a possible (there no advantage in slowly correcting a mistake)

This is what schakel did in his program "helm control" (which I can't find right now, maybe he's taken the download offline).

The problem with this is how the different commands combine. Right now the commands are ordered simply by their execution time. But when you have commands without execution time, how are they ordered? You will need an additional "number" to specify the order of the lat/lon commands. But how do you combine the order of lat/lon commands with the order of the timed commands?

There are multiple sensible answers to all these questions, a choice needs to be made about how to deal with these special cases. Then the server would need to get a large update, and the client needs an even larger update.

I think I'm reading my converter works with the new qtvlm date format?

Be sure to let me know when it fails (if possible, send me the file that makes it fail). I haven't tested with the new qtvlm date format, so double check the output dates.

I've heard from people that in this new month QtVLM may use "maj" instead of "may", causing the date conversion to fail.

I've updated the converter to automatically translate
"avr." to "apr";
"mai" and "maj" to "may"

(Tech note: the date_regex and date_replace variables can still be used to override these translations to something else, when the new month comes for example)

Don't you want a boat for yourself? Anyone can steer sol you know, anyone can mess up your tactics. With your own boat you don't have that, you can join in the chat, you appear in the leaderboard.

It's most important to keep you happy. I would want to help you get what you want, but I'm not sure what you want. If I make a special version of sol for you, which has a predictorline and all even during the race, would you be happy? I think there are only two drawbacks to this:
- you need to register for races yourself (takes two additional mouse clicks)
- you need to adhere to the rules of boatsharing
