Here the flotsam and jetsom of a Timed Race off Stockholm with course changes every 8 minutes.

Puts a poet-in-spe on quite a tight schedule ... wherefore these broken lim'ricks:

I was told by a tillerman tellin' me
That for us to lead by a millime...
    "Do not go aground.
Stay with the island all round.
And just hand me a beer lest you're killin' me."

I am told that I sound like a Dutch
Could it be all the glasses of Scotch
    I am Danish you see
That's the best I could be
And as such I don't understand much.

Well, Bonk my head and what a Hoot
We have a winner and to boot
    He's not a punk
    He is but Bonk
He's greeted with a mighty "TOOT".

And this one is for Bonknhoot:

I would like to invite you to dinner
Because you are so much of a winner
    With Jepsom in line
    WTF just behind
And in fourth just a regular sinner.

[In this limerick, WTF only works if you spell it out. This, however, is NSFW.]

Gazing at the endless horizon and pondering the words ascribed to Theocritus and Cicero: "While I breathe, I hope."

Any sailor who thinks he's a hero
Will know the words 'dum spiro spero'
    He'll be sailing his best
    While he's shouting with zest:
"If I cannot be first, I'll be zero"

Another day, another bay. MustangMark and Pocket Rocket were exchanging friendly banter when I arrived in chat. Please, forgive my inept language at the end.

A dapper young Briton named Mark
Has escaped the attacks of a shark
    He saddled his mustang
    Rode off with his SOL-gang
And beached the poor shark in a park

But his friend has a trick in his pocket
And it makes that boat surf like a rocket
He has kept Mark at bay
For at least half a day
I dare think Mark is thinking "Oh, f... i.!!!"

It's always scary to be ahead of ITA10267. Usually it's an indication that you are in the wrong place at the wrong time:

Oh, I know you are all chasing ITA
From the front but he's still gonna beat ya
    He'll be lurking awhile
    While he's checking your file
Then he'll pounce. His attack's gonna freak ya.

Distractions from a quiet Friday afternoon SW of Itaya, Brazil, in the South Atlantic. Bonknhoot, who's actually Irish, was target practice:

To follow the swings of the wind
Is a struggle that taketh no end
    Starboard or port
    South maybe North
To our monitors we are all pinned.

I don't really know where you are from
But I've followed you, flotsam and Jepsom
    A Swedish SOL god
    With courses quite odd
And the cola to add into our rhum.

Oh, Bonky, don't mind me at sea
I'm an old fart and barely can pee
    There are courses aplenty
But as long as we're friendly
We are certain to meet at the quay.

There is a young man name of Bonkhoot
Who is Swiss, Dutch and British to bootboot
    He must be unmarried
    His life is unharried
I will hail him with my chipper toot-toot.

So my Irish friend met with the Hooters
Not in Mexico - that would be putas
    Must have been USA
Or at least so they say
For he bonked them and now he will mute us.

There was a good fellow from Cork
Who was anything else than a dork
    He was SOL'ing quite wisely
    And often did nicely
Based on imports of good Danish pork.

Musings on the oddities of DTF in the South Sea.

Oh, I'll spin ya a yarn about South
Just as true as my name it is Mouth
We don't know where we are
    Except far from a bar
And there's nothing that rhymes well with 'outh.

So, to help us establish positions
We have SOL-tools and ample provisions
    DTF round the Pole
    When you're sailing with SOL
Is a curious case for magicians.

Yet another boat takes on the lead
Being fed by his Blue Water feed
    DTF is a riddle
I'll just play with my fiddle
To distract me from what I must read.

    ....

And here is an excellent read for improved understanding of the DTF-in-the-South phenomenon: A blog post by Hmm

  • Short Races
    Board » General Discussion
A friend, Wolff, and I have talked about the joy of short races as compared to taking out whole weekends or weeks.

We would like to create a series of race proposals for SOL comprising e.g. nine races - three in each time zone, US, Europe and Australia.

The races would be short averaging about three hours and thus could be completed in one sitting.

Up-down courses are probably not feasable since the races would have to be planned and coded long before the WX. Alternatively, we could do round-island races.

We'd be interested to hear what you think of the idea and we'd be happy to hook up with someone in the US and in Australia who'd be prepared to set up races in their time zone.

    To Owa Raha we go,

We now chase the SOLer called Smo.

Reflections on a race where the Top 37 spots are completely out of reach:

    To struggle to be 38
Is a thing that most sailors hate
    You want number one
    But the options are gone
With regret we accept it's too late.

    An ode to Rumskib
    (Rumskib means 'spacecraft' in Danish)

A young German sailor with brains
Doesn't care if it blows or it rains
    His boat is in orbit
    His aid is an asset
But from chatting he mostly refrains.

As the Rumskib was tracing its rhumbline
Through Malacca, we all felt just so 'klein'
    He is so far ahead
    While the wind's mostly dead
Whereas Rumskib must feel he's on cloud nine.

When comparing myself to a spacecraft
I feel much like I pilot a liferaft
    The spacecraft is Rumskib
And I waste my rhum keep
So at least I will know why I'm so daft.

Isla San Lorenzo RTI 2025

SOL’s SRC (Sailonline Race Committee) has taken us to some unusual places in the past, and San Lorenzo Island off Lima’s Callao peninsula is definitely another one. Housing a naval base and a penal institution, no vessel is allowed within 300m of its shores. Also, with no sources of potable water, it is a matter of debate whether it is an island at all, and not just a large rock. So, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to BBQ; you’ll be arrested and go thirsty! We return for the first time since 2018 to race thirteen potentially unlucky miles in J-30s; have fun!!

Joanne's Test Race Zone

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
