    I think this could be fun. SOLers tend to 'want' the fastest boats in the strongest of winds. But reality is not always like that. And to be honest I rather have low winds in a simulator and good winds IRL than the other way round.

    If we want SOL to be a good simulator then an ocasional low wind race OR a race in mini650's should be part of the game...

    We have a polar for the mini650.

    Last october we did the 'Poor mans race', a race in two legs from Charente via Madeira to Salvador Brasil.

    So keep in mind that those 2 legs already exist in SOL (you don't need to remake them)

    But of course, the race you proposed is slightly different... looking forward to your proposal!

    (I am also a mini650 fan!)

    The 'Around Britain and Ireland' could be a nice race

    Another thing I found is this map of the Beagle's route. There is currently a tv-program running on dutch television where they use a clipper stuffed with all kinds of electronics and are remaking the journey as Charles Darwin made it in the 19th century...

    I also joined the Yahoo group. But am not that satisfied as most of you =)

    Apart from the banners and other uninteresting content around the calendar, my biggest concern is the possibility to embed the calendar in the sailonline website. So far I have not found this feature. And is the calendar public? Or is it only visible to members? That might be unwanted.... calendar should be public / open.

    But I'll go with the masses, Google would be my choice, but if you want to go for Yahooo, fine by me...

    Apart from the fact wheither we should have a seperate email(list), I think race requests are better gathered via a forum. This keeps them (and the discussion about it) more open for everybody to see and contribute.

    This would keep things within the userbase and will keep the SRC (sailonline race committee) more open, less secret...

    An emaillist which forwards all incoming mail at something like racecommittee@sailonline.org to all our private mailaccounts could be used for internal communication. But this could also be done in the forum. Advantages of using the forum instead of mail is the fact that all communication is preserved on the server. There is no need to maintain the mailinglist (less hassle for SOL-people) and again the open character of the SRC.

    Just my thoughts, but I think it is best to keep things as simple as possible. All we really need to operate as a SRC is
    a) Own category within the forum
    b) A Calendar app of some sort
    c) A lot of ideas for races... =)

    I will try setting up a Google Calendar. Never worked with it before but it looks promising.
    Features are: I can give people the right to add/edit/etc events. All events are public. You can easily embed this calendar in any website. Or you can just import the calendar into your Office suite or iCal for Mac...

    Will share the url when I set it up...

    I really like the Viking race as proposed by 76Trombones.

    I also have some ideas for races, but I am currently more interested in finding a solid way to organize this Racing Committee...

    I think setting up a special part in this forum for the Race Committee is a good start. It will be a good way to receive ideas and discuss them.

    It's up to Jakob to tell us how far our autonomy will reach in terms of putting races into the system. And the possibilities of an actual calender on the website with all races 2 to 3 months ahead.
    (I am a professional web designer/developer, if there is something I can do to help.....)

    In the mean time I imagine the call for a Race Committee is actually providing more work for Jakob (emails and forumposts to read) so I will stop here...

    BTW: I am also known as RemyBlom in the game... changed my nick but it appears not to be a global change :S

Joanne's Test Race Zone

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Marstrand to Cowes 2025


We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025


Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
