OK folks.... here we go!
The start out of Brisbane is a toughie... reminiscent of the start on the way to Noumea before we tweaked it! Bearing in mind that few SOLers are in this timezone, we will probably need to adjust the number of waypoints - however true-to-reality we wish to be - to make the thing even remotely DC-able! To view the race please log in as the sol boat: USERNAME: sol PASSWORD: sol and then click here I love all the info associated with the course (viewable in the kmz file). I thought that may be the case so I've started on an "abridged" version that will make it a bit easier but still keep to the course in general. --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-08-20 09:18:56 --- “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

A3 Leg5 Brisbane to Hamilton Is. - Abridged
UPDATED I've taken out 7 waypoints to make it easier to set DC's at the start. Also renamed WP1 (WP2 in first markup) to its original name before bureaucrats gave beacons numbers. NW Fairway Buoy is now left to Starboard. The course still keeps very close to the IRL course but gives SOLers a bit of room to move. I hope that is more suitable. --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-08-20 09:19:16 --- --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-08-20 11:29:10 --- “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

I think that a very serious question needs to be asked here. Do we need all these waypoints to "navigate" us on what is a fairly direct course? Do we need to be led by the nose from point to point?
Start and destination are all that is needed---otherwise we will end up with a "Procession", It is not the job of the "Course Designer" to arrange all our Delayed Commands for us. --- Last Edited by Rod at 2012-08-19 22:58:33 --- If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

A3 leg5 Brisbane to Hamo v2 I have taken out another 2 WPs from the 1st abridged version. This is about as minimalist as we can get before losing the character of the IRL race. See my comments in the original GE markup. There is over 100NM between each WP from WP2 to WP7. Plenty of room to move. Legs5 & 6 were always going to be "constrained" races because of the nature of the local geography. Also, where possible, we wanted to stay true to IRL races. The 1st markup waypoints are exactly as stated in the IRL sailing instructions. AGage was a point to point skiff sailor IRL so I don't think he would mind. How many waypoints were in AGage's Tour Downunder? Legs7, 8 & 9 will be long open water races - over 1000NM each - with few WPs. When all 9 legs are completed, I think you will see that there is a bit of everything. I disagree with your last statement - that is exactly what course designers do IRL. SOL is a simulation, not a video game! ------------------------------------------------ UPDATED .kmz FILE --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-08-21 03:41:12 --- “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

Hi guys. I think we have a good compromise here. Aaron would deffo want us to be highlighting/featuring IRL Australian races as he was very aware that they were sorely missing from the SOL racing calendar but wouldn't want it to be a follow-the-leader situation.
So.. keeping the features and sailability (or do I mean SOLability) of a real race so that it is recognisable as such while making it fun for SOLers, which is what you are achieving, is perfect in my book! I won't be able to amend the course today - have a scan at the hospital followed by a friend's birthday tea! BUT t'will be done probably tomorrow. In the meantime, Tyger, please would you rename your latest kmz to something shorter and re-upload it? It's name is making the column overlap with the Races column! Thanks! ![]() |

Well we are getting close to starting the first leg of this race. Aaron's birthday was September 26 so... that will be the date (in Adelaide) when we start this series of races.
His family will be informed and, who knows, maybe they will take a look in and let his friends know too. NEXT QUESTION Do we want this series of races to be a SOL series? with X out of Y total races counting? with all races counting? OR Shall we just let them be raced as they are in SYC and Week category? What do you think? P.S. Don't worry that we appear not to have completed the circuit, Tygerhas been away but is now cracking on with doing just this! |

A series would be good, say 5 or 6 out of 9. However some SOLers may not participate if they think they may not be able to complete enough legs. My preference would be to have as many SOLers as possible have a go even if for only one leg. So, individual races is another possibility. Either way, if we do say one Leg per month that would mean Leg9 finishing back in Adelaide around the 1st anniversary of Aaron's passing. Sorry, that doesn't answer the question, just adds another about timing between legs. _______________________ Posted by Tyger --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2012-09-07 09:59:52 --- |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Nearly there; only 2500nm to go, round the Horn and up the Red Sea to Suez into what will more than likely be more headwinds for this sixth leg of our African circumnavigation, to be followed in September by a final sneaky dash up the canal back to where we started all those months ago. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
