Leg 8 is now available for preview folks. The wx system is a v large one but I suspect the W and N bounds may be too close in for wx systems etc. So... please have a careful look and let me know where they need to be moved to (if they need to be moved).
Thanks! To review the race, first log in as the sol boat: USERNAME: sol PASSWORD: sol then click here. _______________________ |

I don't think the bounds need to go any further N, that is getting into the Intertropical Convergence Zone and weather won't come from any further North. So its fine for the northern part of the course.
In the south, weather will come from the SW. The famous "Fremantle Doctor", a cool, strong SW wind. So named because after a day of hot desert winds it arrives as if prescribed by a doctor. So for the southern part of the course, I would like to see a bit more of the West and South. --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-09-30 16:52:13 --- “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

I am going to close the preview now, we can always look at it again. Perhaps someone could post a suggestion for the race/wx system E and S bounds so that we have room to sail!!
Thanks. |

A3 - AGage Around Australia
Proposed Schedule While thinking about how the whole A3 series would pan out, two factors came to mind. Firstly, getting back to Adelaide around the 1st anniversary of Aaron's passing and secondly, Christmas/New Year and holiday period. I don't know about the northern hemisphere, but down here everyone is on the move from the beginning of December - office parties, on holidays, at the beach, visiting relatives, sailing irl or at the cricket. This goes on until mid Jan. Even the "once a year yachties" are out sailing between Xmas and mid Jan. In other words, not always having computer/Internet access or too hungover to SOL. With these factors in mind, I came up with the following proposed schedule: Leg3: Start later in Nov, say the 30th. This will allow a long break over December and Christmas/ New Year and give RC time to get settled in Florida and maybe work out Internet access. Leg4: Start Jan 11th or 18th - everyone will have recovered from Xmas/NYE and be looking to get back into SOL by mid Jan. Apart from the Syd-Hob and Melb-Hob, the first big regatta in Aus is Geelong Race Week over the Australia Day Holiday weekend on Jan 26th. Leg5: Start Feb 22nd Leg6: Start Mar 22nd - one week before Easter. Leg7: Start Apr 26th - Legs 7 & 8 are across the tropics but after the end of the cyclone season. Leg8: Start May 24th Leg9: Start Jun 25th or 29th - difficult to judge exactly getting back to Adelaide on the day and can't be sure everyone will make it. Starting the final leg home from Gage Roads off Fremantle on the anniversary date (29th Aus time) could be a way for everyone to celebrate "taking AGage's spirit back home". Initially, there was some questioning the long gap between Legs but when told the idea was to get back to Adelaide on the 1st anniversary of Aaron's passing, there was full support. I don't think SOLers will mind a longer break over Dec/Jan if this point is understood. Just some thoughts - comments welcome. “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

Dates look really good. Either start leg 9 on the anniversary or have an additional short leg on the anniversary near Adelaide, say a 20 hour race in a skiff.

Good thinking Tyger... yeah... festivities does have an effect on SOL schedule. Happy with it I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not... |

I like the scheduling - nearer the time we can decide what we do at the end. Right now my preference is to round off the tour round Australia, as Scotsman says, with a rapid zoom around the waters off Adelaide, much in the style of our man Aaron.

---------------------------------------------- I'm feeling that way as well. Might I suggest starting Legs 5 to 8 a week earlier than in the proposed schedule above, Leg 9 on the 14th June giving SOLers time to get to Adelaide. Then on the anniversary (evening of 28th your time, morning of 29th down here) we do Leg 10 - The AGage 100, a 100nm triangle around the Gulf of St Vincent in Aus Ltw Sharpies. Should be able to get the polars from the association and in June there will be a 20knt SWer blowing up the Gulf. Sharpies will do 15 - 18 knts in that weather. Any shorter and it will just be a drag race. If the weather looks like easing off then we can shorten the course well before the start. Should work out to be a 10 to 20 hr race. See attached .kmz as a quick markup, no details or description included yet. --- Last Edited by Tyger at 2012-10-28 05:35:48 --- “We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Nearly there; only 2500nm to go, round the Horn and up the Red Sea to Suez into what will more than likely be more headwinds for this sixth leg of our African circumnavigation, to be followed in September by a final sneaky dash up the canal back to where we started all those months ago. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
