For a second year, SOL is buddied with The Tall Ships Races. This year we are sailing a Class A Tall Ship, a 90m Barque, so the races will be run as a full series.
The real event comprises three races and one Cruise-in-Company where the boats don't race. Because SOLers don't know the meaning of not racing, SOL's Cruise in Company will be ranked for SYC purposes but will not be included in the series ranking. Later in August there will also be an Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta from Dublin to Liverpool. The start of the Tall Ships race from St Malo to Lisbon is unusual but not unique. Square-rigged ships are very vulnerable when sailing along a lee shore and the North Brittany coastline is potentially hostile. It was therefore a wise choice to allow the ships to claw out of the English Channel and into the Western Approaches by using their engines if needed, and getting themselves into a more favourable wind pattern.
The accuracy and availability of the GPS system has made a race organiser’s job much easier in that Waypoints can be used as course markers rather than having to rely on fixed navigational marks. I remember having to start a race after thick fog had descended on the fleet while they were maneuvering for a start. I took a similar action and directed each class to pass through a mythical ‘box’ delineated by waypoints. Competitors always have to take their own Finish Times so this crossing of an 'imaginary' Start Line and recording their Start Time requires a similar code of honesty. |

Why are there a few boats that are WAY out in front of the pack so soon after the start? It can't be explained by sailing a better course since the pack is clearly sailing a wide range of angles. Something isn't right.

The "gold" boats in the SOL client are the real ships being tracked. Due to the wind direction, the real race shifted the start to a "virtual" location offshore, that SOL is using as well.
The real fleet have a (virtual/gps) 5nm wide starting line that they were allowed to cross anytime between 0600 and 1800, keeping a note of when they officially start. So not only are the gold boats different from we are racing this leg (MIR and Dar M. are 20% longer and set 50% more sail), but they got a head start  We should catch some of the others though.

ahousten - they are six of the real tall ships whose tracks we have hooked into the SOL race screen. I don't know if you have read into English chat at all but if not, click on the Homepage link to the real Tracker and you will see how tracks match up!
The real boats are listed in SOL's Boats Tab with the prefix "@". The real boats sail with us but don't finish with us so any ranking throughout the race disappears at the end so that they don't grab a ranking from a SOLer.  |

AHOY SOLers!
I have just been reminded of the original announcement regarding the Tall Ships race series: The real event comprises three races and one Cruise-in-Company where the boats don't race. Despite having reviewed the series set up before now, for some reason I still hadn't got it right. SO... the series has now been adjusted so that it will be, as advertised before the series started. Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
