Modelled after the Quebec to St Malo Transat run every 4 years since 1984. This is one of the ocean racing classics run previously by just about everything fast. This year it's the Class 40s turn with a fleet of 19 boats. 4 multis will make sure there's room to tie up in St Malo.
![]() The race starts in front of the old city of Quebec before making its way down the St Lawrence. Once clear of the river, there is a turn at Percé on the Gaspé penisula before crossing towards (and between) the French islands of St Pierre and Miquelon. Once clear of Newfoundland, it's a relatively high-latitude west-east transat, before entering the Channel and finishing in St Malo. Hint! An easy way to view race proposals with attached kmz files is to copy the attachment url and paste it into the search box in google maps. No need to load GE, and they display "flat" as in the SOL client. --- Last Edited by 76Trombones at 2012-06-25 20:41:25 --- |

Hi 76T I contacted the organisers for a buddy-up but unfortunately they are already partnered with VR (it wasn't obvious at the time I looked at their site!) ...so... your name for the race is perfect and SOL will deffo be doing it.
Do you know if the Class 40 polar we have in SOL is up to date enough for what we need here? Thank you for the reminder!!! |

Huh - that's interesting. Talk about a low-profile relationship.
This year won't be quite as historic as previous races without the unlimited boats, but it's a heavily "branded" race with a long history. Not surprised at all that they're protective of naming rights etc. I just figured it was a safe assumption/approach. It's a demanding race. From a racing perspective it's a pretty great fit for the way SOL works but I'd be interested to hear what people think of the start. The real boats always seem to enjoy the first stretch, as it's long distance racing, but you can see you competitors at all times. I admit that it's an awful lot of tacking. |

"Low Key" isn't the word. At the end of May I had been browsing the race website, scoured it for traces of virtuality and came up with zip. I then sent a request to the email on the site, and ended up a few days later with a "negatif" from the Directrice des communications ... <<sighs>>.
Anyway, will our Class 40 be OK? |

76T - I've been looking through the website and it appears that the start is from 1100-1600hrs local (Quebec) and there is mention of classes other than Class 40.
I can't work out what time our Transatlantique should start so that we are, relatively speaking, competitive with the race? Would you have a look and see if you can find a start time please? |

Yes as mentioned in the intro there are two 50' and one 60' trimarans, as well as one W60. The "real" race will be the much larger Class 40 fleet.
They haven't published sailing instructions yet, but I expect that they'll start at or close to 12:00, so I suggest we just plan for that. The first stretch will be an interesting/difficult matchup anyways as the St. Lawrence is both strongly tidal and still has a significant flow after Quebec City. Not sure who the favourites are. There are a few boats to keep an eye on. The two Multi50s might be fun to watch - not sure if they are more or less equally matched. The 60 footer is ex-"Elf Aquitaine III" - that was the fastest 60 in the 1988 edition of the race (back while the big catamarans were still racing). Likewise the Whitbread 60 was originally "Swedish Match", 3rd in the 97-98 edition of the Whitbread (the last before Volvo took over as title sponsor). |

hi 76T and everyone else.. this race has now been set up and is ready for preview.
It will be open for a couple of days for everyone to have a chance to check waypoints, course bounds etc. To check the race, just log in as the sol boat using these credentials: Username: sol Password: sol Then click here I was going to add in a waypoint to adjust the finish line in St Malo but thought you would prefer to propose any changes yourself. ______________ --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2012-07-03 11:59:01 --- |

I guess the natural place to drop a turning mark would be Ile de Bréhat / phare du Paon, or the associated Sillon de Talbert. Maybe the mainland would be more fun as it may keep the islands/shoreline in play.
They're both right on the great circle approach though, and would play havoc with the rankings. Thanks for the preview - I think I'm OK with the way it is, but am open to suggestions from the fleet: do we want rhumblines that don't cross Bretagne, or (more) accurate rankings? |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Nearly there; only 2500nm to go, round the Horn and up the Red Sea to Suez into what will more than likely be more headwinds for this sixth leg of our African circumnavigation, to be followed in September by a final sneaky dash up the canal back to where we started all those months ago. We’ll be sailing a not entirely appropriate-for-upwind-work 60ft Trimaran!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
