I can't figure this out! I have 1907 miles to Cape Horn. NZL 2389 has 2101 miles to Cape Horn. The mileage shows that I am behind them by 1200 miles. It still shows that I have 5300 miles to go. Sorry I only have around 4000 miles to go. What is going on here? Please advise. This kind problems have happend before when crossing the dateline. Please check before the race starts in 18 hours.

Does your DTG value shown in race message 'racing with ## nm to go.' differ from the one shown in the leaderboard ??

This highlights some peculiarities in the way SOL computes your DTG.
In the manual there is an image of rounding a mark, with a line extending from the mark (based on the rhumblines into and out-of the mark). The bearing from your boat to the mark along this line (when your rounding is scored) is also shown on the NOR for that mark. Now, to compute distance to finish line, the server computes the shortest distance between your boat and this line - computing the point on the line which is closest to your boat at the same time - and then also uses this point to calculate how for to the next waypoint after that. A point further away form the mark thus gets a 'double distance penalty'. It then just adds the rhumbline distance of any remaining legs in the race to get your final DTG value. So, the server is not computing the exact same thing for the 2 boats, because their point on the 'scoring line' is different, depending what the XTE is. In fact, if I measure this up now - the South Pole is the closest point on the 'scoring line' for many boats - hence the funky rankings (next leg dist is same for all, but current distance to SP can be less for boats that are more to the W) Bobbert pointed this out as I was writing the above... This is the way SOL roundings always work. They'll start to make a bit more sense as we get close to the cape, but will likely go haywire again after we round. They'll be more and more "correct" as we approach the turn into Itajai, and will be perfect at the finish...

76 Trombones. I will agree with your theory that we are using the south pole for distances. Then, I am presently 200 miles closer to the south pole than the leader and I am still listed as 1400 miles behind them? I am sorry but your theory doesn't add up with the rankings.

Don't worry about it! You'll pop out the other side soon.
Each boat uses a different point to calculate DTG, based on what is the shortest path to the next rounding (when it says "rounded", *not* the mark). Mrnil is currently calculating through the Horn, as that is the closest point on the rounding line from his position. Small distances N/S make a huge difference due to the very shallow angle the Cape Horn mark makes in the GC route. Bottom line is that all the rankings are consistent (consistently "wrong" according to where we will actually sail) and will sort themselves out by the end. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
