Sorry to hear that the map is not working properly for you zero. Most probably what is wrong is that this is my first google maps application so I'm not doing everything properly in that way that all browser/OS combinations work.
Unfortunately as this is a hobby project for me, the possibility for me to test on different platforms is very limited. I have now added possibility to compare two routes in the maps, i.e. Compare Exmeromotu & PetrM Thanks Aaron for your comments. So far I plan to continue doing just hourly updates for even short races. However, I have stored also the full routes (traces.xml) from the boats, so I think I can reproduce the exact tracks of the boats later. I also added the race start point to the tracks so that they start from the same point. The next step is probably add some indicator of time to the routes, so that one can compare where the boats were at a given time. Perhaps some other data there too. PS. Now the urls don't have extensions. The .map-extension was just something I put there when started sketching the feature. |

This is positively BRILLIANT!!!!
SOL MUST have one of the most tech-savvy communities anywhere. There are NO other sailing-sims with this level of sophistication. Terrific Job!! Well Done. SP |

hmm this is marvellous!!! I just took your PetrM vs Exmer link and swapped out Exmer for me and... boy can I see where I went wrong!!
As I don't spend much time thinking about my SOLing (a bit too much else to to on-site as well is real-life!) things probably won't change but it will be invaluable for those who do study their performance. Thanks for sharing your "hobby" with us!! ![]() |

I have now added markers for boat positions for every 6 and 24 hours to help comparison in the maps.
I'll probably have to adjust the marker periods to be shorter for the shorter races though. |

Development goes on with my site. The next addition is more detailed boat routes for the maps. These can be accessed from the map views with the link "Show detailed track".
For some reason the routes I have stored for the boats don't exactly match the hourly positions, so the progress markers might be a bit off from the routes in the detailed view. Hopefully this doesn't cause too much confusion. The detailed route map loading is quite slow, especially for the SWR leg. I'm planning to add there some caching to hopefully get it a bit faster. As it is quite slow, whenever you switch a boat in the map view, it reverts to the faster hourly positions. |

It just occurred to me while watching todays SWR Leg4 practice racing that the tools I have built for this site could quite easily be used for practice race scoring as well.
Quick sketch about how I thought this would work, without actually really knowing how practice races go (never participated in one) so I can be totally wrong: 1. A race course is set up, the race admin creates the race. The marks can probably be read from sailonline.org data automatically. Start time should be specified for the race. 2. Before the start the admin or the sailors themselves would add the participating boats to the race. 3. Due to the nature of the short races, during the race the boat positions would be fetched every minute or so. Only the participating boats data would be saved though so updating this often would hopefully not stress my server too much. 4. As the site would know the route (the waypoints) it could calculate the leaderboard during the race which could be displayed in real time during the race. 5. Race finish times could also be determined and displayed automatically. 6. Only problem is that the site would not know if a boat has rounded a mark or not. I guess some logic could be developed to handle this but for informal races I suppose it would be sufficient for the race admin or the boats themselves just marking themselves rounded on the site. If people (especially the people organizing the practice races) think this would be useful, I might create something like this. However, if people decide that things are good how they are now (I guess the current informality can be good thing) I'm fine with that as well. This is just a thought. If this is considered to be a good idea, I suggest that the way it could be done is discussed in a separate thread as it would be a separate utility from my sollog site. |

I have finally written some documentation for this site in the blog which I recently started:

Would it not be easier and simpler to use the existing race format and programming, with "choose-a-boat", starts, turn marks, mark notification, race order, and finish order---but let the race run for only three hours? Almost always the "practice races" run on the days prior to the start of the actual race, when little or no server attention needs to be paid to those boats which are merely "pleasure sailing" the actual course for the coming real race. No additional programming would be needed, except for the addition of the three hour 'cut-off' time.
p.s. The weather information would need to cover only a very small area, for a very short period of time, thus reducing server load. There have rarely ever been more than 20 participants in these 'round-the-buoys' "practice races". --- Last Edited by Rod at 2012-12-18 00:18:40 --- If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Welcome to the legendary "Westcoaster," a race that has tested sailors for over 50 years. Spanning 435 nautical miles, this iconic journey takes racers from Melbourne, across the formidable Bass Strait, and around Tasmania's rugged west coast to the finish line in Hobart. Organized by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria, the Westcoaster is renowned for its challenging conditions and adventurous spirit. This year, our SOLers will tackle the course in the swift and capable First 47.7, a yacht launched by Beneteau in 2000, built for speed and endurance in long ocean races. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
