Ciao all
during yesterday' St.Petersburg race we experienced the following "delays" in baltic wx updates : 0830 - 4,5 hours late 2030 - 6 hours late I would like to suggest adoption of the Noaa updates for baltic races as well, even at cost of less precision in matching reality. Ability of planning pc attendance is one of best features of sol, and baltic updates are presently incompatible with that

I agree with WIN. I had to calculate the last 3 tacks by DC and a late update ist not very helpful for my sleep and my ranking.

I think the question is - how often are they late? NOAA is not immune to publishing late forecasts either (although not very often)
Perhaps, if the race area is large enough that there is no extra precision to be gained from using Baltic then they should not be used? (SOL resamples the forecast over large areas to keep wx data to a reasonable limit) I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

I'd support a switch to GFS as well. The gain in spatial resolution (sometimes) never seems to balance against 12h "cycles" - leading to less interesting racing, regardless of timing issues.
The NAM data for the US/Canada seems to work nicely though, and we could probably use it a bit more often. |

Yeah very true about the 12 hr updates - i recall a few times the forecast were almost opposites in direction only an hour in! I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

The 12hour Wx was the reason I didn't do this race. The 12 cycle for the Baltic is more often than not late on the weekends. Also there are often huge differences in Wx from the end of one update to the next.

I prefer to stay with Baltic 12 hour forecast. Bigger differences between weather after 12 hours make it interesting. It would be pleasant to have weather delivery on time. Pity that time of weather delivery is out of SOL hands.

I don't mind the differences beteen updates, as they can shuffle things nicely as PetrM mentions.
The 12 hours of fixed wind in between are the bigger problem. Other than for island-dodging competitions, there's too much predictability. The dream for SOL would be continuously variable weather. |

BANG!!!
Problem with terrorists and those who suggest high treason is a warning shot between the eyes. One of the great beauties and benefits of SoL is that the racing IS in REAL TIME WITH REAL WEATHER. This allows those who live near a race have the benefit of local weather information from the local TV, Radio or newspaper etc. This add a nice little realism. This same information is available to all via the internet, just a few searches away. Personally I enjoyed seeing the Italian weather forecast data available during a race last year around the islands south of the Italian mainland, thanks to somebody's helpful post in chat. Otherwise I would never have seen the way they present their weather. Likewise in NZ we can watch the TV for Sydney Hobart and The NZ races. We can all learn something. Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
