More and more people enjoy this funny short practice racings. Today we had nearly 20 boats. Most of the boats are doing very well and cross the finish line at nearly the same time. We talk about seconds and its impossible to see that on the screen. If there is any way to make these practice racings more official i would be very appreciated.

If we would make practice races more official it would be compeletely against our original idea racing in club race style on relaxed setting trying to beat and win. And making it more official would not help at all. Be Happy to contact Sol admins and create your own race class if you want. -Smo |

Africa did not follow the course as described in the race pic . Therefore must be 'DSQ'.
Crossing the final line with many boats at once is frustrating, always doubtful and inaccurate. It would be great if the exact (server)time while crossing the line could be monitored to make the ranking. Racing two hours to get an unclear finish is very unsatisfying. Even when such race is 'just for fun'. Pocobueno --- Zuletzt bearbeitet von Pocobueno am 2011-10-19 02:19:32 --- |

Practice racing is for fun. If it doesn't feel like that then don't race. Africa made perfect rounding following NOR. Picture is not the race description but written word of marks how to round those and in which order.
I hope people are not starting to take practice races too seriously even though even me if racing am fighting for podium using my last power to win ![]() |

I would add that as done quite many IRL races and only marks apply unless stated otherwice in NOR.

Thank you for taking the time to post about the discussion that arose out of the second practice race. Let me try to respond.
Practice racing has always been a fun and informal way for SOLers to arrange groups to race/matchrace during pre-race practice. Newsartist and others started this some years back and time and habit has evolved it into what we have now. It is not intended to be official. It is intended to be visible and inclusive for everyone who just happens to sail past and who may wish to join in. Anyone(s) at any time may choose to matchrace with each other. Because a regular 1800utc group (1900utc in winter!) has developed, Marks (now shaped like dots instead of boats) were set up for the group by Jakob. The Marks are moved into place, usually by me but sometimes by newsartist, and the course is one I dream up (unless someone very kindly proposes one!!). The course is then typed up, often in a hurry, and it is this that must be more precise (esp. if islands are involved!). To have a more precise finish is something that may be possible. I will bring this thread to the attention of AGage/Kalle to see what they think. In the meantime, however, ONLY the first five past marks or the finish line will be "ranked". This should ensure a greater precision/focus - from me, at least, as it can be very confusing to keep tabs on lots of boats. Logging in as the sol boat does give an accurate and independent view of the finish and if even doing this and Max Zoom doesn't differentiate between two racers then they will be deemed to have tied. Smo is right.. practice racing is meant to be fun for everyone involved. It is also meant to be a useful and helpful way for newbies to learn how to SOL as well as for more experienced SOLers to test out a new polar. |

Hi RC and Smo,
u are right. PR ist just for fun, its like a race with friends. If all decide we have to round marks and islands and RC made it very clear "We always round marks AND islands in PR" its a rule for me and most of the other racers too! Its crab to talk about "official race rules" in this contents. |

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
