A thought on the handicap results: The top places are usually taken by SOLers who have completed very few races. One way to avoid this would be to use their best result as their rating until they have completed 15 races. Another way would be to increase their rating by a particular % based on number of races completed.
The rating becomes easier to handle after the initial 15 races are complete. This is function of how we are establishing the initial rating. Using fewer races would speed up this process, but risks having less valid initial rating. |

Well... getting an initial Ranking is always difficult because of the fact that it's initial.
I think no one would take an initial Value that serious to complain about it. Maybe one can mark it as initial or not confident in the Ranking. I don't know the formula for getting an initial Ranking. If i would be asked how to get one that's converging relatively fast to a "real" value, i would suggest to take the arithmetical Medium of his ratings so far, until he's sailed a certain amount of races, say fifteen. If that's too difficult to do, i would reduce the minimum number of Races to be sailed for an initial ranking, but introducing a Mechanism to lower this ranking afterward, if necessary. |

I didnt actually notice the last few posts until after I had done this, but I tapped directly into the DB to output lot more data you could use (going back to Jan 1 2010)
2 files included: * boats_data.csv - full race-id;race-name;boat-name;ranking;elapsed time;ET components (D;H;M;S) - approx 3.8Mb This file is sorted by race start-time, and then each boat is in rank order within that race. * races_data.csv - is data for all the races referenced in boats_data.csv - race-id, name & extra info like #started, #finished, race start time, polar used, Series etc... 56,845 data rows in the boats_data file - that will fill up ya spreadsheet!! Note: the data is SEMI-COLON separated, as in the race data file 2 fields are themselves comma separated lists - so make sure to remember this when importing into Excel or whatever... Also Note: The DB seems to have a few 'inconsistencies' in it, 2 or 3 races didn't record finish time (atleast, not in the way I grabbed it for other races?) and the like, SO - these are not included for consistency/completeness Download zipped data here (914Kb) HTH 
Also, if you provide me with specific formulae you are using, I could script it up and run it over the DB similarly to what I did here - then ideally integrate it into the ranking system [Edit/Addendum:] Please note - it is only because I have a 'non-racing' account on SOL with admin privileges that I could do this... Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
