I was a little concerned about only using the rating based on the ratio compared to the winner - eg 0.98. Whilst this is similar to handicap systems that are used IRL, eg PHRF, I was trying to think of a different number that would be easier to understand, or would show the difference more clearly.
I did think of converting the above ratio to a number determined by 1/(1-ratio). eg 0.98 = 50, 0.999 = 1000, 0.9 = 10. However, it is likely that there would be little difference between many sailors and we would need several decimal points. Easy enough to convert these. |

Going from 1 for the winner to 0 for the last boat is a bit difficult to establish fair results. The main challenge is that the cut off is different for every race. If there is another race soon after, then the cut off is relatively early and fewer boats finish. If later then there is more time and more boats finish.

I've now analysed about 30 races from the start of last year with the aim of determining the starting handicap. If anyone is interested in the data, I'll post here assuming the file size limit allows this.

Well I think 76T alluded to trying out various methods, but upon rereading my post I don't think that I conveyed how the Index is created from the Time difference between the boats so that the range is converted to a scale from one to zero.
I could demonstrate this technique on a couple of sample races if the elapsed times from the sample group are available in your spreadsheet. This would not be the actual handicap but a step along the way to constructing one, hypothetically, or not. Here is the data for about 30 races held Jan to May 2011. The worksheets with a number are the results of each race. They include finish time and calculated race rating based the ratio of the finish time compared to the winner. The sheet races is a summary of the races. Sailors is a list of all sailors. hcp1 to hcp3 are the analysis of the results to determine a starting handicap.

Thank you, I will try to comprehend your methods without altering the process while demonstrating the already described approach as an alternative statistical model.
I will apply this indexing to a small subset of the data in order to test its usefulness to standardize the results between long, medium and short races. None so blind |

As we talked in chat, I have now automatically converted the race leaderboard pages from the site to csv files to be used with excel.
Attached is a zip of finishtime_xxx.csv files where xxx is the race number. Each file has the following comma-separated fields: ranking, boatname, boattype, syc_member, DTF, Time With some more time, I probably could have also included some other data about the race, like race name, number of participating and finished boats and race start time. Hope this helps! |

Thanks for harvesting this data and making it readily accessable in a csv format.
For my purposes it would indeed be useful to have a list corresponding to the race ###'s that describes the name,date,start time. This could be a separate file. No rush, just whenever you happen to revisit this compilation. --- Last Edited by A2R at 2012-02-29 03:29:38 --- None so blind |

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
