This year will be the first time that SOL buddies up with The Tall Ships Races and to allow SOLers to have the fun of choosing to race a different boat in each event, the events will be run independently, i.e., not as a series.
The first race starts at the beginning of July, so it is not long to decide which boat appeals. The SOL Engine Room is liaising with Yellowbrick Tracking who are the tracker providers for the Tall Ships Races 2011 to get one boat in each category onto the SOL screen.

Although the weather looks unfavorable for it I'll go with Class A as the full riggers are awesome.
Will the performance calculation be different for each class also? The small ones would pick up speed quicker than the big, heavy ships. (chksix) |

Pierre, performance % is computed the same for all boats, as it is in other multi-class races - class isn't part of the equation (literally ).

A well-sailed square rigger can be more manoeuverable than a fore-aft rigged vessel. The sails on the different masts can be braced around independently, so you
have side-to-side thrust available even with no steerage way. Fore pushing bow to port, mizzen pushing stern to stb, rudder ready to back stern to stb etc... The closest a modern rig can get is backing the jib, but in most boats it's pretty much a momentum affair. Not super snappy though! Sails could be hauled up, or struck and reset, rigging re-led... Some excellent reading for between tacks: "Seamanship in the Age of Sail" There a very generous preview on Google books! Also maybe "Eagle Seamanship" and "A Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor". Not so wonderfully illustrated, but fun all the same. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
