In 2011, the Tall Ships will race between Waterford, Greenock, Lerwick, Stavanger and Halmstad. Lerwick is the welcoming city after the "cruise in company" leg and the starting port for the Second race to Stavanger.

Jawik - do we know what boat types these "tall ships" are? The only historic polars SOL has, at the moment anyway, are the Viking longship, a Clippership and a Square rigger.
I am no sailor let alone one versed in historial vessels so.. maybe someone can help us out here. Are you proposing that we copy the Tall Ships race? I do hope so as I think it would be a lot of fun!! |

Please consider a Tea Clipper race from China to London, England. Please also consider including the waters in the docks of the ports. Maneuvering large square riggers in narrow channels would be a welcome difference from just an 'open ocean' race. If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

A Clipper will do the task but see here for vessels calling into Lerwick. The race it self is starting from Lerwick to Stavanger. We can see a sailing map on the first web page at bottom.
Can we copy thisfrom Waterford to Halmstad ? Can we take contact with Sail Training Intl and offer them to follow the race with a tracer and SOL ? We are going out with S/Y SEBI to meet the flotilla/race if we are ready at that time - Lerwick to Stavanger and if we have our new rig on board. And perhaps we will start the race from Lerwick with SEBI. Has not notified us yet but the idea is to place SEBI in it. High Flying Ideas 
The crew of S / Y SEBI is only my wife and myself, but together we have over 125 years of knowledge to sail alone. +50 feet - tomaster and lots of fun on board. SEBI is a converted old Swedish lady of mahogany and oak. So I have two older women to struggle with at sea. And I'm just a man doing the best he can

Yes, of course SOL would "do" the individual legs of the Tall Ships 2011 - as detailed here. As for taking up a contact with the organisers... that's a great idea ... it might prove to be too short notice for this year BUT it never hurts to ask! Do you have a tracker on SEBI? If not, then JuJu who used his tracker for @Zeno in the Lets Get Out of This Country race recently is very prepared to let other SOLers use it - its a small and very portable device!! If this idea appeals just sing out (via email to me if you like: jsbcoo7@aol.com) and I will put you in touch with JuJu. This is going to be fun!! |

I must say you are quick on the trigger RC.
 We hope that the response from STI is positive.
We do not have tracker on board but plan to purchase one before we put out to sea. We are still waiting for a new main mast and rigging so we can move forward from last year when we were on our way south to warmer areas. The two ladies like to sail hard and the result came when I discovered that the main mast was about to take a trip on her own. SEBI is now stripped down so we wait until she is presentable to go before we take some pictures. She is a determined woman who does not like that we are ruining her make-up. The rules for participating in STI is that we need to get two young people between 15 and 25 on board. If this becomes relevant, we consider this as we approach the start from Lerwick. |

Having seen Belem come past us outside Brest last week, I think that a generic AIS tracker would probably work if the route goes through the areas covered by Marine Traffic- it would also cover multiple targets
All the Tall ships would have AIS I think as you need it over 300 tons. You probably don't need STI's approval as the data is publicly available although it would be polite and a good tie-in ----------- edited to re-jig the AIS link --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2011-06-26 18:56:56 --- |

Jawik - did you see the email I forwarded on to you with the polar 76T has created/found? Once the 'Gods have set it up in the database we can test it out.

I note with some interest that the Gorch Foch has a double spanker on the mizzen. Is there a correct name for the 'spanker-topsail'? If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
