I brought up this idea in race chat (IMOCA L6 IIRC) and people seemed to like the idea.
Basically I am proposing a team race, based on nationality. The idea would be a kind of SOL World Cup... The race would be an ocean race, ie around 20+ days ETE, and require a minimum number of persons per team, say 4(?) but as many as you like above that, and obviously would be set a reasonable time in the future to allow teams to organise, say 4-6 weeks atleast (and depending on SOL server demands etc - although this race would have alot less entries so probably not place too much demand on Server) The idea would be to have 1 member of each team nominated as 'president' or whatever for the purposes of communicating etc (nothing to do with how team is run internally). So, each country could also come up with a team name, and then the boat name prepended with the country ie AUS_, USA_, SWE_ like the ITA boat. But a more imaginiative name than '2011' - ideally something that represents your country - a bit like sporting team nicknames. Expressions of interest and rule discussion is invited in this thread... 1 further idea, is that each boat would be required to become an SYC member (not much between 4+ people?) and so further help raise funds for SOL... Just an idea, not stating as a rule at this stage. Of course, if this idea works out and there is enough support, perhaps it may even evolve into an annual series, perhaps 4-6 races per year, to determine a SOL World Champion Nation?? --- Last Edited by Aaron Gage at 2011-08-23 20:24:32 --- --- Last Edited by Aaron Gage at 2011-08-23 20:24:47 --- I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

Bump!!
And Ammendment/addition to Above... Teams need not be Nation based, especially for countries with fewer SOLers... ============================ Wow, so much enthusiasm in race chat, and 70% of yes votes, but no discussion or anything ?? Expressions of interst, start a team?? OK, Who is interested in an AUS Team?? GnT? Scott? Chappo? Anyone ?? --- Last Edited by Aaron Gage at 2011-08-24 06:56:16 --- I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

AGage, All;
It's a great idea! Here are thoughts/questions. Would there only be one boat per country or could there be more.... like bobsledding? (Countries with large contingents would have either huge crew or SOLers left out of racing.) Would we just run one race or a series to mix up inshore/offshore, short/long events? Timezone for single race would also be a significant component for specific countries and/or small contingents, though I am willing to go to AUS if the US wants me to be awake for the "Dog Watch" ![]() Idea... maybe allow "petition" for countries with small contingents to combine (example: Antigua and Bermuda= Bertigua??). Perhaps some volunteers from large country contingents offer to sail with smaller groups? (I will sail with Tibet!) If it is a single race, suggest having 1-2 other races running simultaneously, as we usually do, so that those not heavily involved in the SWC (SOL World Championship) will still be able to keep their addiction fed. If a series is considered, I have some ideas on how that could work but that's another post if anyone interested. You wanted some feedback-- be careful what you wish for! SP |

Beautifull idea!!
Maybe a "Test"-race first - just to feel the way ppl feel for such a race/series ? I am sure Mouth and SKOVSER will join me on a DEN-team - but can we make it 4,5 or 6 sailors? Anyway, we can borrow some norwegians og south-sweedes - it was Danish, not long ago ![]() I´m in! |

In reply to Hawk and SP:
Yes an initial first race was exactly what i had envisaged... If it works and there is demand, THEN we can think about a series... IMHO, short courses somewhat negate the advantage or utility of having a team though, so to my mind sticking to long races would be best, although there is no reason I guess, not to throw in some 'In-port' races... Again, depends on what participants want... Sure, I see no reason why a country should not have more than 1 team. And in the OP i mentioned there should be no upper limit on how many on a team, but there should be a lower limit... Perhaps 4 is too many, I was just drawing on ITA_2011 as an example... Also no reason why a team has to all be from same country, although if we ended up with a 'SOL World Cup', then it would be reasonable that only Nation based teams would be eligible for it... SP: Yeah of course there would be other races going as per usual - in fact I would hesitate to list such a race(s) on the home page at all, perhaps a wiki page could be setup for it?? As really there are only relatively few boats in such a race, it should not impact server much at all ? SO: Throw the idea around in race chat a bit, and point people to this thread to post discussion ![]() I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

I bet the kiwis, aussies and brits will do well out of a national system as we/they tend to gravitate into time zones a neat 12 hours apart! Canadians and Americans perhaps less so, and I have no idea about the Nordic countries - do you spread yourself around the world as well as anyone else?
For the record I hold NZ & Australian citizenship and I am a permanent resident of the UK. Shame I am not such a good sailor... if someone wants me in a B team let me know... |

Interesting, as I had just assumed if you race under AUS flag then you probably live in AUS ![]() Also, not so much about what citizenship you hold, but what flag you sail under here on SOL ?? I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__ |

Ahhhhh Aaron, you know how Aussies, Kiwis, Canadian etc get around the globe by exploiting their grand parents places of birth. Or, in the case of Kiwis in Oz, just turning up
![]() That make me a brit then, as that is the timezone I'm in, the flag I sail under and the weather I suffer... |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
