Hi all. We have a RL honesty race on the go here. I'd love to know if anyone has a spreadsheet created for such a race which would ndicate the best conditions in which to start. Obviously, I have the course, and the distances/bearings between each mark, and I have the boat polars.
To save me starting from scratch, I thought it would be worthwhile asking on here first.... |

It's a set course. Any boat can sail it at any time of day or night, however many times they want. At the end of the season, the best corrected time wins. The honesty bit is because you have to be honest about your time as chances are no-one else will be there to see you make that perfect 3am run......

The race I'm talking about is literally real life. A set course here in Bermuda in different classes of boats on corrected times. You are mord than welcome to join us, but you must be able to handle rum & champagne!

Baggus, why dont you use a router?
It would require a rather sophisticated spreadsheet indeed to do what you want, and would only be emulating a router anyway. You can start by eyeballing a reasonable time in a grib viewer - then plug that time into the router, and trial each hour a few hours each side. When you find the 2 smallest ETEs then split between them and try a H.30 start time. You wont really get much more accurate than down to 15 minutes, and (esp IRL) other factors might override this anyway.... Bluewater is free... This is just what router users would do in a SOL timed race anyway... Edit: i reread u didnt say you had gribs, so use uGrib or Expedition LT - both free and capable to download the wx for a specified area... I would recommend Expedition LT as it has more choice of weather models, and its own propreitary system for 'remodelling' the GFS and CMC into smaller grid sizes. Actually if you sail alot IRL then their subscriptions arent too badly priced either - check out predictwind.com - actually come to think of it they have a free online router you can use, and input your own polar data into and a course... wont be as accurate as BWR or Expedition but it will def allow you to narrow in on a good time. --- Last Edited by sol at 2011-04-12 05:34:26 --- |

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
