But let's say I decided to play on these premises since I know that the update will not show, there and then, if I rounded or not, and rather take a chance on a 360 pirouette later in the race with better wind in favor of me ...
I could quickly get 150 meters in this way and especially when we return in the same direction we came from. Is not easy for you to discover this trick. I could have done this but let it rather be and instead keeps a good distance from the mast of the buoy and have peace in mind. |

Surely the function of the RULES in any game is to insure an EVEN playing field for everyone. The penalty for breaking any of the rules is such that you cannot then WIN. In this case, the "return and round correctly" requirement teaches that you must do it right the first time, to have any hope of winning.
The point has been made that this is "practice racing for newbies"----(I do not 'practice' while racing----'that' I do while sailing around on my own.) With rare exceptions, everyone who participates in these races is a fully competent sailor of considerable experience, who is in no need of any 'practice'. These are short races for those who endeavour to WIN. To pretend otherwise is dis-ingenuous at best. If anyone wishes to race without following the rules, he/she is free to do so, but NOT to claim that this constitutes a WIN. If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy. |

If 360 is ok and I loose 150m in it I'll take 300m shortcut in next race and win 150m. And win. Then in next race I'll do it too but someone takes 400m shortcut and wins. Then in third race someone else or me take 500m shortcut and wins. On an on. There is no system to analyse how much someone wins loosing mark and looses doing 360. Rules are rules and best way to learn for newbies is to follow them. You cannot miss mark and just do 360 in IRL RACES.
Would add that person missing mark just a little and doing 360 could be taken to results with a note "dsq" or "missed mark" like *7. Smo (missed mark) or *7 Smo (DSQ). But how you define missing mark "little" .. impossible on distance as boats have very different speeds so gain is very depending on that. Also doing 360 in some boats slow winds makes no perf loss at all, doing it on Orange at tws 20kts would be a huge perf loss. I Like to cut corners and marks close, if missing I'm just happy to get DSQ. Why don't we just follow ISAF rules? quite a log I am missing the practice....
you "must" rounding correctly. full stop. Any other "shortcut" as Smo suggesting is DSQ. just in case, as happen often to me  , you sink by hitting the boat mark or you pass the mark the other way around, you kindly make a 360° to keep in fighting. just due to the fact that the tracks are update every once and could pass many minutes from the rounding.
surprised to see such a discussion, if you not even try to make the rounding correctly you are not a "practicer" my 2 cents. (many regards to the most fair community) Friendly Gilles |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
