The first in the series concerns rad-fters and kayakers...the Coruh river very close to where we started yesterday, Hopa.
Coruh river is said to be one of the top ten rafting rivers of the world. It is located at the most eastern part of Balck Sea region and is 376 km long with 442 kms in Turkey and 24 km in Georgia where it discharges into the Balck Sea near Batum, just North of where we started our race, Hopa. It originates from Mescit mountain (height 3255m). Its bed is narrow but deep and flows in a valley with steep banks. Thus the flow speed is very high. Max. flow rate is569/529 m3/sec in May and min. flow rate is 53.09 m3/sec in autumn months. The average slope is 5%. About 100 kms of the river within the Yusufeli county is considered to be best for rafting and kayaking. 12 kinds of fish habitate in the river. Here is a video about rafting and kayaking on the Coruh river: http://www.vidivodo.com/281250/coruh-nehri-europe#videoalt and some photos: |

SINOP.
Diogenes of Sinope (Greek: Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς Diogenes ho Sinopeus), was a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynic philosophy. Also known as Diogenes the Cynic, he was born in Sinope (modern-day Sinop, Turkey) in 412 or 404 BCE and died at Corinth in 323 BCE.1 Diogenes was one of the few men to ever publicly mock Alexander the Great and live. He intellectually humiliated Plato and was the only pupil ever accepted by Antisthenes, whom he saw as the true heir of Socrates. Diogenes taught his philosophy of Cynicism to Crates who taught it to Zeno of Citium who fashioned it into the school of Stoicism, one of the most enduring branches of Greek philosophy. Diogenes of Sinope was always controversial. Exiled from his native city for defacing the currency, he moved to Athens and declared himself a cosmopolitan (in defiance of the prevailing city-state system). He became a disciple of Antisthenes, and made a virtue of extreme poverty, famously begging for a living and sleeping in a tub in the marketplace. He became notorious for his provocative behaviour and philosophical stunts such as carrying a lamp in the daytime, claiming to be looking for an honest man. He regularly argued with Plato, disputing his interpretation of Socrates and sabotaging his lectures. After being captured by pirates and sold into slavery, Diogenes eventually settled in Corinth, where he was befriended by Alexander. Diogenes was a staunch admirer of Hercules. He believed that virtue was better revealed in action than in theory. His life was a relentless campaign to debunk the social values and institutions of what he saw as a corrupt society. None of his many writings have survived, but details of his life come in the form of anecdotes (chreia), especially from Diogenes Laërtius, in his book Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers. Basic information about the Bosphorus:
The formation of the Bosphorus is not known and is still a subject of debate. The valley created approximately 6000 years ago was filled with water to combine the Black and Marmara seas.It is 18 nautical miles in length. The narrowest point of the strait between the Aşiyan-Kandilli in the 700 meters at its widest between the Büyükdere-Beykoz the 3500 meters. Average depth is 60 meters and the deepest place 110 meters in front are the Kandilli. There are two main currents in the Bosphorus The first is the surface currents. Second, undercurrent below 15 meters from the surface.Surface currents generally flows from the Black Sea to the Marmara, while the contrary undercurrent that flows toward the Black Sea from the Marmara. It is almost like a river flowing from north to south from the Black Sea towards see of Marmara. The reason being the thirteen major rivers discharge into the Black Sea. These three rivers constantly feed the Black Sea with fresh water. The Black see is usually 30cms higher than the Marmara producing an current of 3-4 knots and at points up to 7-8 knots. The meandering straight combined with the currents make it very hard to sail through for large ships and serious accidents have happened in the past. |

Isla San Lorenzo RTI 2025

SOL’s SRC (Sailonline Race Committee) has taken us to some unusual places in the past, and San Lorenzo Island off Lima’s Callao peninsula is definitely another one. Housing a naval base and a penal institution, no vessel is allowed within 300m of its shores. Also, with no sources of potable water, it is a matter of debate whether it is an island at all, and not just a large rock. So, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to BBQ; you’ll be arrested and go thirsty! We return for the first time since 2018 to race thirteen potentially unlucky miles in J-30s; have fun!!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
