As we can now run above 70 N it is time to try it out. Brainaid already suggested Longyearbyen.
Therefore I have made up a race from Terschelling to Svalbard in remembrance of Willem Barentsz who discovered "Spitsbergen" and was born on Terschelling. Tempest - this looks fun!! Just one additional waypoint perhaps on Norway (a) to permit the SOL rhumbline to stay offshore and (b)to help with dtg rankings in the race.
We will need to set up a new map for the area but this can be done while you are "tweaking" your course (although it looks pretty darn good as-is)!!  |

RC i will add another waypoint North of Bergen near Fedje. In that position it doesn't limit any options.
For boattype it is also possible to use the Clipper although it doesn't match the actual boattype either ,it comes closer to the real boats used in that era. However that wil make it a loooong run |

Tempest - yeps a clipper-type would deffo be slow BUT hey... if your aim is to recreate an historical trip then so be it!.
Looking ahead at the proposed calendar(s) there are a few long-ish races coming up so if you were to go for the long option it might be a little while before the Barentsz is scheduled. BTW once a race is set up it is always possible to change its boat-type for subsequent runnings. |

Hey the Clipper is actually one of our faster boats! has to be remembered that she's more than twice as long as the canting-keel supermaxis and spreads vast sail area
Just needs a little wind to get going.
It's a fun polar though, and the weather should suit. 10d or so? Good race! I'd like to add a polar from the age of sail exploration to round out the fleet. Anyone with info for Matthew, Trinidad, Endeavour etc? Speaking of polars... On the first voyage they tried to *leash* a POLAR BEAR and bring him on the boat?!? |

Tempest - happy to say that SOL now has a new weathersystem for your race, thank you brainaid and also, because brain wanted to check that all works, he actually added a couple of waypoints and chose a boat!
The boat brain chose is the Ostar 35ft, as "this boat can cope with the weather and would be right for a race of about 1600nm (it would take around 14 days) which means it would be a SOL ocean race" BUT the choice of boat is deffo up to you!! I hope you are OK with this? I have registered the sol boat for the race and it is now visible on the SOL homepage so - please check it out!! Still unsure when the race can be run but it will be good to know its ready and waiting

RC I think we can move the start point NorthWest of Terschelling between Terschelling and Vlieland makes an easy start on DC. Additional WP in Norway is fine. Courseline looks a bit curvy especially last part near Svalbard might be confusing. I am not sure about the boat yet i still fancy the clipper but we still have time to think it over.
SOL it took them 2 hours to catch the polar bear at first they tried it with a rope later on they went for the heavier stuff. Later on in the journey when they were stuck in the ice a bear actually climbed on board. Tempest as Sol --- Last Edited by sol at 2010-07-22 16:32:28 --- |

Tempest- now how does the start point look?
Clipper is fine, really - deffo your choice of boat!! As for the rhumbline, I am not quite sure what has happened there. I will check with brainaid and come back to you. I haven't seen a rhumbline going so wide of its waypoints before!! I have sent a mail but I think it might be because of the way the SOL chart has to accommodate a lot of lines of longitude in a small area? If you zoom totally in the line is fine. Anyway.. Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
