Dear fellow SOL addicts,
Many of you have signalled recently that the SYC ranking has become too demanding, and also that the 15 races considered correspond to a shorter period of time than in the past. This is itself the result of a more intense schedule since the creation of the race committee, with almost every week one race on working days and one during the week-end, plus ocean races in parallel. After some discussion, the race committee therefore proposes to make the following changes to the rankings. SYC ranking The SYC ranking will be computed on the basis of the best 10 of the last 30 races, instead of the best 10 out of the last 15 races. 30 races correspond to approximately 3 months of races, broadly equivalent to what it was in the past. As the number of best races taken into account remains unchanged, it will be easier to skip a race from time to time without dramatic impact on one's ranking. New rankings The race committee also proposes to create 3 new continuous rankings. The Ocean Race Championship will be computed on the basis of the best 6 out of the last 10 ocean races. This corresponds to about 4 to 5 months of ocean races. The Week Race Championship and the Week-End Race Championship will be computed on the basis of the best 7 out of the last 14 week and week-end races respectively. This corresponds to about 3 months of races. You can find the new rankings among the 'Series' in the right-hand column below the races and the SYC ranking. Other issues The race committee might alltogether exclude some races from the rankings, especially drag races which require a particularly strong presence in front of the screen. The methodology to compute the rankings remains unchanged. There are currently no resources available to introduce weighting of races for example or move to a different computation system. Poll We would appreciate it if you could give your overall opinion on these proposals in the poll below. Please note that the placement of the polling boxes is somewhat confusing. If you like the proposal, chose the polling box ABOVE the statement 'I like the proposed changes to the rankings'. If you do not like the proposal, chose the box ABOVE the statement 'I do not like the proposed changes to the rankings'. If you have no opinion, chose the box at the bottom. I see these changes taking place with great satisfaction , and appalude to the effort . Two comments only :
1 - Do not understand the eventuality that a race does not concur to ranking because too demanding on time ....with the new system a race too demanding can be easily skipped with no trouble . 2 - I see that the SYC general ranking is not yet updated to top10 of best 30 ...will it be retroactive ? or does it start from now ? Thanks again for a very good solution to my "stress" ... ![]() ciao ciao |

1 - Do not understand the eventuality that a race does not concur to ranking because too demanding on time ....with the new system a race too demanding can be easily skipped with no trouble . >>> You might be right, Winston. Problem is that participation to drag races depends very strongly on the start time. Anyway, the race committee will decide on an ad-hoc basis. >>> 2 - I see that the SYC general ranking is not yet updated to top10 of best 30 ...will it be retroactive ? or does it start from now ? >>> The SYC ranking will be adjusted progressively. After the start of each new race, the total number of races considered will be increased by one until we reach 30. So best 10 out of last 16 races tomorrow, best 10 out of last 17 races after start of Caribbean Sprint, etc. In theory, the transition should take about 7 weeks. But I am likely to get fed up somewhere in the middle and apply a final change retroactively! ![]() Regards, Francois --- Last Edited by Incognito at 2010-02-20 20:56:43 --- --- Last Edited by Incognito at 2010-02-20 20:57:48 --- |

personally I would favour trying 50% of raced counting ... just like a long RL series (the principle is that if two people split 1/2 the first place between them, you cannot rank without countback of some sort)

Thanks for all the work from the Race Committee! The changes represent an improvement though possibly a little overkill. I agree with Colin that counting 50% of races would be a minimum.
The Weekend/Weekday and Ocean Race categories have been long talked about. I would further suggest that it would increase interest to have some subrankings, for example by nationality or region, perhaps men/women/youth. I think the principle ought to be inclusiveness. An average racer might still make the top ten among his countrymen, and feel like he/she has something to strive for. Again, thanks for all your hard work! Bob McDonald "Journey" |

Hi !
There are some unofficial rankings /ranking ideas on wiz' site. I really like the newbie ranking and I think that we should make such a ranking official to make it more interesting for new SOLers. If we do that we could have more races for the calculation of the SYC ranking. This would make the ranking a bit more stable and would allow racers to do some DNS DNF races without a free-fall in the ranking (speaking from own experience) Comment on proposed rankings: I like the idea. /spackel --- Last Edited by Incognito at 2010-02-21 17:18:27 --- |

The new rankings are a great idea! You guys obviously thought it through very carefully, so thanks for your hard work.
I can see the rationale for not including the drag races in the rankings, but what about one more separate ranking for them? Tim (Spookie) |

Hello Journey,
As discussed in the chat: regarding the rankings per country, my idea would be rather to add a 'country' column to the existing rankings, and allow to sort the rankings on that column. Like the leaderboard in the race screen. But that requires some IT development, and therefore takes time to implement. Regards, Francois --- Last Edited by Incognito at 2010-02-21 17:05:43 --- |

Hello Spookie,
That could be considered. However, I wonder whether there are enough drag races to make a ranking out of them. Regards, Francois |

First: I agree with Colin and Journey, counting 50% of races would be a minimum.
The categories with Ocean Race, Week end and week race is good. AND, like Winston says, even the sprint races should be counted. Statistics is fun, and I would like to see more ![]() http://www.tangosailing.nu

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
