EVERYONE is invited to join in a small informal series of match races being held during practice for the Zilt race- this is an idea developed by several SOLers in chat over the past few hours. This is an ideal opportunity for those new to SOL-sailing to ask questions and experience some social racing. START 31 January 2010 (today) at 1300utc from 51.05 / 1.10 (zoom the chart to 2decimal places and you will find us!) FINISH today at the line from 50.77 / 1.32 and 50.75 / 1.30 which is land so you can just ground yourselves there. THE REGATTA will base itself at the location of today's finish at the Isle of Wight and over the coming days there will be a few short round-island races and maybe a cross-Channel or two! We will be deciding on the next day's race in chat but it will also be posted here. N.B. start times for these races will be spread around to give people in different time-zones a chance to participate in real-time. IF YOU JOIN IN – please either post your name here or just announce yourself in chat so your boat's name can be included in the informal score-keeping. At time of writing the standings (by dtg) are: Salmon 17.3 -- Netherlands robert1 19.1 -- Sweden YBW Victorious 19.6 -- Great Britain Sassy83 19.9 -- Sweden newsartist 21.6 -- USA AUS Scott76 21.7 -- Australia WairuaExpress 23.2 -- New Zealand RainbowChaser 24.7 -- Great Britain DAY 2 - Monday,1 February 2010 THE RACE: Around the Isle of Wight START: 0800 utc OR 1800utc Leaving Cowes, turn RIGHT out of the bay, and following the original America's Cup route clockwise round the island, pass "£Norman's Buoy", then "Nab Light vessel, (the cut mark),and then Mill Bay." In this case it is just clockwise!! there are no marks visible. FINISH: At Salmon's Corner at 1.49/50.66. For anyone wishing to complete the circumnavigation in fulfilment of the AC course, please note that the Day 3 start will be from 1.49/50.66. 	0800 START In good winds Day Two began with a running start by Samsailor and DC starts by Scott and RC. RC had to set DCs while taking the dog to the vet and returned to find RC aground and Aztec, who had joined the race partway, well in the thick of the fight to the finish.Taking less than three hours to complete this partial circuit of the Isle of Wight the places were: 1st Scott 2nd Samsailor 3rd Aztec 4th RainbowChaser (stillsailing but there's no-one to overtake!!). The choices for these fleet members are (a) go to Cowes and run tonight's race (b) go to Cowes and run again for fun just because (c) stay moored until tomorrow (d) do something else! ANYONE ELSE IN THE VICINITY IS WELCOME TO JOIN IN - THIS IS SOCIABLE, FUN AND GREAT FOR HONING SOL-SKILLS

	1800 START With winds slightly lighter than earlier in the day, the start line saw ybw_Victorious, Salmon, newsartist, robert1, WairuaExpress and RainbowChaser all start together. CG, Smo, werner and sassy63 then joined within the first half hour of racing. It was clear from the start that some were taking this more seriously than others as RainbowChaser (the chatterbox) rapidly fell astern (edit: preparing dinner for self and dog happened about this time). Passing Mill Bay Vic took the lead, closely followed by robert then Salmon, with Smo (who had gone for a sauna), Wairua, CG and newsartist a little distance behind. Werner was further offshore, having taking a wider route and both RainbowChaser and sassy were trailing. (edit: sassy being stuck on a commuter train using the mobile client was at a slight disadvantage!!). With approx. 10nm to go, the order was Vic and Salmon neck and neck, then robert with werner and Smo. CG a little way behind hugging the coast, then sassy, newsartist and Wairua with RainbowChase acting as the sheep-dog far far behind! RESULTS (subject to adjustments) were: 1st Vic 3hr 4min 50 secs 2nd robert +1:14:41 3rd Salmon +1:58:50 4th werner 5th Smo 6th CG 7th sassy 8th newsartist 9th RainbowChaser 10th WairuaExpress (through a malicious DC!) Adjustments sassy's start was delayed 9 mins; CG did a 360 Wairua had to go fix an aircraft Smo artistically coloured in the River Medina thus starting from furthest in the bay DAY THREE – Isle of Wight to Guernsey START: 1400utc from 50.66 / -1.49 DESTINATION: 49.50 / -2.56 AGAIN ALL ARE V WELCOME TO JOIN IN THIS INFORMAL DAY'S RACING!

	DAY 3 - PRE ZILT RACE PRACTICE MATCHRACING - OPEN INVITATION At 1400utc or shortly thereafter, DCs fired for14 vessels at todays starting point on the Isle of Wight and the 90nm trip to Guernsey began. Shortly after the start newsartist was seen to move but for some reason he didn't join the run and Aztec stayed near his artwork (he had drawn the word “Hi” with his boat-track earlier in the day!). Winds were good, 18-9kts from the West which meant that all decided on a fairly straight line to the finish point at 49.50 / -2.56, whether by CC or TWA. At 1700utc with about 36nm to go the fleet had split into three distinct groupings. Most westerly, were batchg, Samsailor, Scott and robert. In the middle are CG, Salmon, Smo, sassy and RainbowChaser, while most easterly are Vic and werner with woody55 and glynnwi heading for France and WairuaExpress already ashore there. By 1800utc the fleet was beginning to converge as Guernsey got closer. Discussions about where to race the next day began with choices between the Island of Quessant or Mont St Michel or CG's mooring (back in the UK). The race finished at 1917 with a breathtakingly close finish between Sam, batchg, Scott and robert. They were closely followed by sassy, CG and Salmon with RainbowChaser not far behind. Vic, werner and Wairua then arrived in that order with woody55 bringing up the rear. Sadly Smo parked himself on the other side of the island while glynnwi decided to sample the delights of Cherbourg!! THANKS EVERYONE!!! 	Start: 1000utc Destination: Ile de Quessant (48.47 / -5.10) Leaving CG, werner, Samsailor and Aztec still moored up, the rest of the fleet (12 wessels) set off into 17kt south-westerly winds. As the Ile de Quessant lies about116nm WSW of Guernsey this meant that the fleet had an interesting challenge. By noon, werner had left Guernsey for England, CG, Samsailor and Aztec were still in port. The racing fleet however had spread across 37nm and the interim rankings (based on distance-to-go measured on Google Earth) were: 1.Wairua (96.47); 2. Scott (96.79); 3. Chaser (96.90); 4. Vic (97.22); 5. Smo (97.66); 6. Salmon (98.03); 7. batchg (98.28); 8. robert (98.81); 9. woody55 (98.92); 10. sassy (100.27); 11. glynnwi (102.15); 12. newsartist (111.18) CG left port and started in the direction of Quessant and made very good progress so that by 1800utc the ranking (including CG) were: 1. Vic (40.06); 2. Wairua (40.22); 3. Scott (40.70); 4. Chaser (42.98); 5. Salmon (43.83); 6. robert (44.48); 7. batchg (47.79; 8. woody55 (48.28);9. sassy (50.63);10. Smo (53.69);11. glynwwi (77.69); 12. CG (79.11);13. newsartist (94.11). The race ended just before 2200utc with the following placings (names in brackets I didn't see finish but placings are based on dtg). 1st Rainbow Chaser 2nd Salmon 3rd Robert 4th Scott 5th Vic 6th Sassy 7th Wairua 8th batchg (9th Smo) (10th woody55) (11th CG) (12th newsartist) DAY 5 – 4 February 2010 – ILE de QUESSANT to WEIR QUAY, DEVON Tomorrow's practice race will start at 1000utc from where we are (Ile de Quessant) to CG's IRL mooring at Weir Quay, Devon... coords 50.40 / -4.21. 	DAY 5 – ILE DE QUESSANT TO WEIR QUAY, DEVON(50.40 / -4.21) 119nm An overcast start to the day but with winds from the SSW at more than 20kts a speedy start was made by 12boats at 1000utc. Sassy is now on IRL vacation. By 1140utc the racing boats were spread out over 51nm - no-one can say that the practice match-racers are followers!! Distance to Go (from Google Earth) at this point showed the following rankings: 1. Smo (91.86); 2. CG (93.95); 3. Vic (94.06); 4. robert (94.82); 5. batchg (94.96); 6. Rainbow (94.99); 7.woody55 (95.78); 8. newsartist (98.68); 9. pc (99.44); 10. Salmon (100.73); 11. Scott (107.05); 12. Wairua (115.72) Due to work and other commitments there wasn't much chatter on the “radio” during this race and most were sailing on DCs although, if you look at the Tamar, you'll see that this was either a foolhardy or brave thing to be doing! In fact this finish point was a very difficult one to get to safely and for this Race Admin apologises. However, by1620utc most boats had finished and the rankings awarded were: 1st batchg 2nd CG 3rd Vic and Robert 5th pc 6th Rainbow 7th Smo and woody55 (8th Scott) (9th Salmon) (10th Wairua) ( ) = based on distance to finish mark at time of reporting DAY SIX – PLYMOUTH TO SANDOWN, IoW Due to the difficulty of navigating the tidal Tamar, the start point for tomorrow (Day 6 of practice racing) will be from the S of the small island at the entrance to the Tamar: From: 50.33 / -4.15 To: 50.65 / -1.16 Start: 1000 utc AS ALWAYS,EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN IN AT ANY STAGE --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2010-02-04 18:13:36 ---

	DAY SIX – PLYMOUTH TO SANDOWN, IoW From: 50.33 / -4.15 To: 50.65 / -1.16 Start: 1000 utc Most of the fleet started on time (via DCs) and although there were fewer sailing today, due to work and IRL considerations, there were still 12 boats competing for today's honours. By 1130 the rankings (based on distance to go as the crow flies, calculated on Google Earth) were 1. woody (93.32); 2. pc (95.43); 3. Scott (95.9); 4. Vic (97.09); 5. Wairua (97.45); 6. robert (98.27); 7. batchg (99.56); 8. Smo (101.0); 9, Rainbow (101.15); 10. newsartist (102.91); 11. werner (104.97); 12. Aztec (108.1). With winds easing a little but remaining from the SSW the fleet made steady progress towards the Isle of Wight and by 1330 the rankings (again, based on a straight line in GE) were: 1. batchg (57.09); 2. Smo (57.94); 3. woody55 (58.92);4. pc (59.03); 5. Vic (59.22);6. Scott (60.09); 7. Wairua (60.90); 8. robert (62.14); 9.werner (62.43); 10. Rainbow (63.03); 11. Atztec (67.45); 12. newsartist (70.03). The afternoon passed uneventfully for all except Wairua whose DC took him into the Channel, and for Rainbow who switched to a CC at thewrong time so by 1700utc the distance to go rankings were 1.pc (4.32); 2. woody55 (4.97);3. Scott (5.22); 4. Smo (5.4); 5. bathcg (5.79); 6. Vic (6.31); 7. Rainbow (8.45); 8. robert (8.86); 9. werner (9.63); 10. Aztec (11.47); 11. newsartist (14.31); 12. Wariua (17.06). Just when it seems that very little can change in just a few miles..it does.. and the final placings were: 1st pc 2nd batchg AND woody55 4th Scott AND Smo 6th Vic 7th Rainbow 8th robert 9th Werner 10th Aztec 11th newsartist 12th Wairua DAY SEVEN - SANDOWN, IoW TO/ROUND BROWNSEA ISLAND AND BACK The final day of practice racing and the choice is YOURS... leave Sandown and then going N or S round theIsle ofWight go round Brownsea Island and return to Sandown making sure that you have also circumnavigated the Isle of Wight by the time you reach the finish!!: From: 50.65 / -1.16 To: 50.65 / -1.16 with a circumnavigation of the island at 50.7/-2.0 Start: 1000 utc (i.e. leave Sandown, if you go N round IoW before heading to Brownsea and rounding it, then you must return to Sandown round the S of IoW... or vice versa) AS ALWAYS, ANYONE WHO WISHES TO JOIN IN IS VERY WELCOME TO DO SO - JUST ANNOUNCE YOURSELF IN CHAT!

	CHANGE OF COURSE FOR DAY 7 PRACTICE RACE Newsartist very kindly sailed off to circumnavigate Brownsea Island to make sure that it was doable and the verdict he pronounced is that while it is doable it is awkward,even when the server was readily processing commands. On this basis and because it would be impossible to complete this practice course using DCs the course we will sail will be “Plan B”, namely to Pegwell Bay in East Kent. Start: 1000utc From: 50.65 / -1.16 To: 51.32 / 1.36 To get to Pegwell Bay we will pass the spot where the Romans first landed when they invaded “Brittannia” and where they built one of the best Roman supply depot/fortifications – this is still viewable (as mostly ruins of course) at a place called Richborough. We will be passing the white cliffs of Dover and Dover Castle itself, fortified by William of Normandy after he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Senlac (Battle of Hastings). This is a super-historical part of England which is much overlooked as people pass through quickly on their way to London so don't forget to use the Google Earth file to “sightsee”!!
