I agree with you 100%. I understand RORC's need to protect names, etc. But when I found out they were taking money from VR. Your letter pointed out many of the things I don't like about VR and pointed a few things that I hadn't been able to quite verbalize yet. Well done Rainbowchaser. I also sent an email to RORC via their website - but nothing much compared to yours - as follows;
This is an enquiry e-mail via http://www.rorc.org/ from: Andrew Cormie <andrew@zembu.plus.com> I'd like to know what are your grounds for objection against Sail Online (SOL), resulting in your action in sending them a solicitor's letter. Your action has caused trouble for several hundred people engaged in an innocent activity which was not causing you any problem. HAVE OF COURSE HAD NO REPLY. |

Those of us that did VORG and other races with VR remember to ask for your account to be deleted. Even if we are not playing they use the account for their PR purposes. Go to the Support part of the forum and ask for removal. Well put RC, bull's eye!
I am also amazed that RORC has chosen VR to team up with just for the money. VR is a joke compared to SoL. However, my advise to the developers (being over 60yrs of age) will be to concentrate on the commercial and legal aspects a.w.a. the technical aspects in which they are doing a great job. I make the comparison between Apple and Microsoft (I hope no one gets offended), although Apple had the technical edge and had (and still has) better technology, MS was much more successful commercially & legally (!). Unfortunately, the world is not what it used to be and sentiments (honour, fair-play, etc.) of RC's email are replaced by greed, flexing muscles (legally not literally) etc. I do not want to discourage the developers but to warn them against bullies who may want to run down the good work they have done. I hope that RC's message gets through to RORC and the matter goes away without hurting SoL... |

Just an update for everyone before I turn in. No feedback, no reply, niente, nada, absolutely zilch from RORC.
On the basis that everyone may be focused on the race itself down at Race HQ in Cowes, I have printed off a copy of my email and sent it with a compliments slip by post to Commodore McIrvine at RORC HQ in London. |

Just to keep this current. As at now, 1644hrs BST on Friday, 21 August 2009, I have received no response from RORC. Because the original email was submitted via the online form I have the incoming acknowledgement from that, so I know my email was received in the organisation.
Has anyone who communicated with RORC heard anything back? |

OK all.. prepare to be surprised!! I have now received an email from Commodore McIrvine, from his private email address, as follows:

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
