Harold Fairhair at Avaldsnes Conversational Old Norse ______________ BLOGPOST To celebrate the commencement of Draken Harald Hårfagre's 'Expedition America', Sailonline is conducting our own virtual race in support of the venture. Our race will cover the first leg of the expedition from Haugesund, Norway to Reykjavik, Iceland. ![]() Draken Harald Hårfagre - Photo courtesy of Draw Events Draken Harald Hårfagre will leave her home port in Haugesund, Norway on 24 April 2016 and sail off for a great challenge across the North Atlantic Ocean. The aim is to explore and relive one of the most mythological sea voyages – the first transatlantic crossing, and the Viking discovery of the New World more than a thousand years ago. The project will create cross-border meetings and inspire people to go beyond the horizon in a modern Viking saga. Along the traditional route, the ship will pass historical Viking settlements at Shetland, Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. Upon reaching the American continent, Expedition America 2016 will sail on visiting ports in Canada and USA. More about Draken Harald Hårfagre and the 'Expedition America' on their website: ![]() And don't miss regular updates on: the official Facebook page the public group Facebook page Sailonline’s Race: Sailonline will be racing our own Viking Longship from Haugesund, Norway to Reykjavik, Iceland starting on Sunday, 24 April. Sailonline's longship was last used in 2012 for the virtual reenactment of the Lindisfarne Raid 0f 798AD. The polar of the Sailonline Longship is based directly on the work done by the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde on Havhingsten fra Glendalough - an interpretation/replica of the "Skuldev 2" find. "Sea Stallion" has done extensive sea trials and several major cruises, and the museum has put a great collection of teaching resources online. At 100 ft, the Sailonline longship is just 14 feet shorter than Draken Harald Hårfagre and true to form, rowing is incorporated into the polar when the wind drops below 2 knots. It will be interesting to see who arrives in Reykjavik first. ![]() _______________ FLEET PICS 25apr16 at 1945utc 26apr16 at 0800utc _______________ --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2016-04-26 08:24:30 --- |

temporarily <sol> skipper found her clone of the longship on 27th of april..
after studying the very fascinating polar there was the choice of course.. finally decided to plot a course up north along the swedish coast and then slowly heading north north west.. trying to reach the nice red weather-arrows-area north of Iceland... and why, dear sol-managers, did you take away my course predictor line..? and why is it the skipper may not directly set a course but has to find some remote ways to something simple as handling the helm? |

The sol boat and useraccount is not meant to compete in races. You will also see that sol is not ranked, or even visible to others.
If you want to sail the race, you should do so using your own account. |

welcome kroppyer
Let's assume <sol>-skipper does not have an account. Let's assume she tried before to sail <guest> Same "problem"! If you want to experience the fun of sol you can only do that if you happen to be in a race in practice time. would it be that horrible to make <sol> & <guest> both steerable during a race? no further comment to be expected from my side. _____________________ can not resist....... a reverse answer to Kroppyer's comments in the answer following this one. heave your mid- dagger and side-board.. you did not get my drift... make every guest welcome on board without blindfolding her. If <sol> is not meant for racing.. ???? just sink her down in the harbour... tighten her with chains to the anchor buoy the moment the starting boooom has sounded. (and do this for <guest> too..) And as for adhering to the team rules? If and when I have guests onboard they may take the helm whenever they want... I mean... if <sol> is not seen in the ranking.. is not seen on the high or low seas.. why bother how and with how many skippers on board <sol> managed to cross a finish line? (Why do you feel the need to write down rules where you only can trust?.....) _________________________________________ outside any competiton <sol> finished "Viking Longship Race to Iceland 2016" on 6th of may 2016, 14:18:10 Zulu, at rank @#-1== #165.5. , ._. ._._. --- Last Edited by sol at 2016-05-06 12:12:52 --- --- Last Edited by sol at 2016-05-06 14:20:37 --- |

If you want to experience the fun of sol, you can make your own account, it works during practice racing and during real racing (which is much more fun I think).
You can easily make an account here: http://sailonline.org/community/accounts/register/. No personal details required, just an e-mail address for security reasons. If you have problems registering a new account, please let me/us know. We will be happy to help you out. Don't you want a boat for yourself? Anyone can steer sol you know, anyone can mess up your tactics. With your own boat you don't have that, you can join in the chat, you appear in the leaderboard. It's most important to keep you happy. I would want to help you get what you want, but I'm not sure what you want. If I make a special version of sol for you, which has a predictorline and all even during the race, would you be happy? I think there are only two drawbacks to this: - you need to register for races yourself (takes two additional mouse clicks) - you need to adhere to the rules of boatsharing |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Enjoy!

Nearly there; only 2500nm to go, round the Horn and up the Red Sea to Suez into what will more than likely be more headwinds for this sixth leg of our African circumnavigation, to be followed in September by a final sneaky dash up the canal back to where we started all those months ago. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
