Board » Sailonline Yacht Club » 2016 SMPF SCHEME

Hi ALL ;)
I am here introducing you to one of the new topics of 2016 : The SMPF scheme.

SMPF stands for “ SYC Membership Pay Forward” , and will enable once a month a NON SYC member to become SYC member for a full year , courtesy of one active Club member or the Club itself.

It has happened once in 2015 : one SOLer , who is also SYC member ,and wanted to remain incognito had the idea to donate one SYC annual membership to the top finisher NON SYC member in the VanIsle race . The prize has been won by super famous SOLer “smo” , who not only was the first NON SYC member on the finish line , but also won that race.
The SOL Management Team has taken the successful idea on board for 2016.

The first SMPF race will be UP Helly AA , starting on January 26th , and the SYC membership will be sponsored by the Sailonline Marketing Department. The race and Sponsors program for the remaining 11 months of this year will be released as soon as possible.

The prize and prerequisites : one Race per month either chosen by the membership sponsor or in default by the SRC will be selected where the first yacht to finish, whose registered skipper has not been an SYC member for SIX months prior to the start of that race, will win an annual sponsored subscription to SYC from the date he completes that race.

In 2016 the scheme is only on trial basis , and therefore sponsorship is not open to all of you at this time, but , should any one active SYC member want to participate , even if he/she has not received the personal invitation letter that I have sent to very few , will be very welcome to the list of SMPF sponsors . For queries and declaration of interest please write to :

coord@sailonline.org

Depending on the amount of interest that will be generated within the SYC members community , the frequency of this race sponsorship might be reviewed.

Please stay tuned on this thread for more news on the scheme.

SOL Coordinator
I am now glad to announce that the initial feedback on this scheme has been very positive , to the extent that we had to raise the frequency of the sponsorship in 2016.

At this time we expect to have two sponsored races per month from April To November inclusive.

Hereunder you ill find the SMPF sponsored race calendar , published in advance and updated with each quarter.

JAN : Up Helly Aa starting on the 26th will be sponsored by the Sailonline Marketing Department.

FEB: IMPORTANT CHANGE NOTIFICATION:
As the Yates Cup starting on the 25th has been postponed till further notice , the February SMPF, still sponsored by The Sailonline Yacht Club, is now associated with the first race of the COGC , starting on Feb 27th.

MAR : Timed Race Elbetico's Fun Run starting on the 4th will be sponsored by Owner of S/Y Mouthansar.

APR ONE : Melbourne Osaka prelude , starting on Apr 3rd will be sponsored by owner of S/Y javakeda

APR TWO : Bay2Bay Leg 1 , starting on APR 30th will be sponsored by owner of S/Y Dingo

MAY ONE : Van Isle 360 , starting on MAY 2nd will be sponsored by the Sailonline Yacht Club

MAY TWO : Tanaga/Kanaga Sprint , starting on MAY 21st will be sponsored by owner of S/Y Sassy63

JUN ONE : Sail FiJi starting on JUN 3rd will be sponsored by the Sailonline Yacht Club

JUN TWO : SoCal 300 starting on JUN 4th will be sponsored by the Sailonline Yacht Club.

Isla San Lorenzo RTI 2025

SOL’s SRC (Sailonline Race Committee) has taken us to some unusual places in the past, and San Lorenzo Island off Lima’s Callao peninsula is definitely another one. Housing a naval base and a penal institution, no vessel is allowed within 300m of its shores. Also, with no sources of potable water, it is a matter of debate whether it is an island at all, and not just a large rock. So, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to BBQ; you’ll be arrested and go thirsty! We return for the first time since 2018 to race thirteen potentially unlucky miles in J-30s; have fun!!

Joanne's Test Race Zone

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Welcome to the Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand's 2022 Evolution Sails Northern Triangle series, which, unfortunately, to comply with latest NZ government COVID restrictions, has been reduced to a duo, commencing with this short prologue of approximately 35nm on the waters of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. As so often with SSANZ events in the past, online we will be racing the event in ever-young Young 88 one-designs. Have fun!

Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
