Sailonline is delighted to announce that it will be partnering with Ocean Racing Club of Victoria, for the running of Melbourne to Vanuatu 2014 which starts in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday, 29 June at 0900 local (Saturday, 28 June at 2300utc).
ORCV was formed in 1949 (as the Cruising Yacht Club of Victoria) and was renamed in 1972, and operates as a not-for-profit organisation to develop expertise in and organise ocean racing in the Australian State of Victoria. The Melbourne to Vanuatu race was first run in 2006 and is a Category 1 event of more than 1800nm from Portsea, Melbourne, to the finish at Port Vila. The Sailonline virtual race is now open for practice. _________________________________ INFO ABOUT THE IRL START from dtayls dtayls 2:1 All ORCV races start in Port Phillip Bay. One of the challenges for those of us sail here is getting in and out of the bay. Ah!. I've just found the place to post these things rather than in the chat session ...
Also, most ORCV races also start at night at around 1-2am in the morning. But why??? Starting at night the col-regs (not the RRS) apply; and then we cross The Rip (a bar and narrow entrance to the bay) with commercial ships, fishing vessels, etc coming in and out 24x7. The first hour of these races is a challenge in itself. It's quite exhilarating. |

And something special about the real-life M2V race is that the SIs allow a yacht to start up to 25 hours after the nominal start. In fact, the SIs say "7.10 Yachts may elect to start at any time up to 25 hours after the start signal."
This potentially takes a little of the 'luck' factor out of the equation when you've got a mixed fleet with some very fast boats at one end and some slugs at the other end of the fleet. This could also be great for SOL'ers who arrive late on the scene, but I'm guessing it's not (yet) an option within the SOL system. |

OK. The real yachts are now visible on the virtual screen. They can be determined by the bold gold colour and have an "@" at the beginning of their boatname. As I was lucky enough to get a podium in this I felt I should do a report. However, as Fifi was by my side and a factor in my best result ever I then thought she should talk for herself on SOL.

We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
