Hello All,
Here is the design for the 2014 Lake Winnebago Race, which is designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club. The race will start at the entrance to Neenah harbor, and will circuit the lake, returning to finish at Neenah. Please join NNYC club members who will be new to SOL, along with long time SOLers Bgosh, Amateur Knight and Zowee as we complete this annual race on their home waters, and help to celebrate this landmark event! hi zowee - I have had a quick look at the kmz (was going to set the race up) but you haven't included any waypoints.
I can assume waypoints at the positions where your course changes direction but... they would need names. We can do this in a couple of ways. 1. You revise your kmz - set up waypoints where you want them and give them local names and re-upload the kmz. 2. You look at your kmz, decide on the waypoints (decimal coords and local names) and list them here. Then we can set up the race for you to preview

Hello Joanne,
I somehow didn't save correctly, and the waypoints, start and finish lines were lost. I have now saved it correctly, and attached the updated course map. This course is different than prior Lake Winnebago races. The start/Finish is Neenah, where NNYC is located. Also I have included a description of the NNYC 150th anniversary and a link to the NNYC archive in the route description. It would be really nice to have this description used on the SOL Races area so that people can see the link and get the full experience of the event. Thanks! Derek/Zowee |

Having set up the wx with nam_awip I was reminded that Sailonline will no longer have two different sets of wx update times.. I then used global_gfs BUT forgot to make the coords W so... apologies but FINALLY here is the preview of the race!!

As a casual observer Lake Winnebago never looked better. The course would appear to be even more challenging than previous editions while covering the entire expanse of this famed venue.

Hi A2R,
Thanks for the feedback We added some waypoints that mark the two most prominent shallows on the lake, so the course is very true to how one would navigate the lake.
Indeed, Lake Winnebago was regarded as one of the oldest and most famous inland lake venues in the US. We at the NNYC are thrilled to sponsor this race in honor of our sesquicentenial (150th) anniversary. See you on the lake

The course works just fine As Is, but in the spirit of giving notes, there is either a switched up labeling or waypoint config between Neenah N & S.

If N and S mean North and South then South is North of North. I know I'm in the southern hemisphere but I'm sure the rule still applies up there.
Also, zowee's original intent was for a clockwise course. By going anti-clockwise we now have the rhumb line crossing the finish line shortly after the start. Hi Tyger - thanks!! N and S do now mean N and S ... and I've moved the finish line so that we don't instantly cross it at the start.
The server would ignore our presence at the finish so early on as we would need to have recorded roundings at the other marks before, but it looked bad so... deffo now an improvement. Derek and his Board are happy with the course direction so I won't tinker with it now! |

Looks good RC. Sliding the weather forward to the start, it looks like a great windward/leeward course SSW at a bit over 6 knots. Should take 10-15hrs depending what comes in after the 7 day forecast.

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
