I will continue to share my long-term weather forecasts and medium term routing WPs in this venue.
I ask that other skippers [especially those in the top 25] share similar data. I truly believe that SOL thrives when SOL skippers have more data. |

Pre race stuff...
First order of business is some much needed sleep, missing any wx updates is not allowed in the southern ocean. Second is to get an idea where the current weather systems are, I am using zygrib and sat images. Third is to check on previous races, this suggests going NE early on, also a late start may be useful*. Routing is problematic because BWR cannot handle the dateline. With both sol and zygrib gribs, I have done routes from 'point X' to Cape Horn to get a feel for the race. unfortunately 'point X' is about 36h away from the start, confidence level zero. Routes to CH will continue thru the entire race. The coastal part in NZL is mostly ignored except for some rough time estimates. An all-nighter may be necessary 
Also ignored is whatever happens after CH. This will be addressed with maybe 3-4 days to go. Beyond that this will be an easy race, just keep up with the low pressure systems, by means of going very fast. Very very very fast. Redshift inducing fast even

Yes Guys
This one has been a challenge so far. Because of the midnight start here in SA I sat up waiting till midnight....Then had to stay awake to make sure I got away from NZ without beaching. This morning I got an hours sleep and when my alarm went off at 5:40 to get up for work it took my eyes about an hour to stop scratching ...and today being a workday I see a fading brain happening in my future!
Man I love this pain
Now. What to do about the routing. Bluewater is not very helpful yet...Oh, wait, I have a plan...Take the average course being sailed by the top ten boats in the overall race ranking and sail that route. LOL. Plan B - Aim for that big purple thing that is going to go screaming past in three days time! |

Has anyone noticed how the DTF and ranking appears to be flawed right now? It's almost 1000 miles off for my boat, and I know my current 13th rank is very wrong when comparing actual plotted courses to other boats.

There are several causes for that.
1. The map projection used by the sol client (mercater projection) is distorted near the poles. What looks like the same distance/size is in reality not the same. If you look at the same area of the earth on a globe, you'll see that the boats south are actually closer to Cape Horn than the mercator projection makes you think. Note that this is only visual, the boats don't move unreal because of the mercater projection. 2. The DTF calculation has (or had) trouble with non flat surfaces. Some of the "lines" used in that calculation are Rhumblines (constant compass course, straight on the mercator projection), some are Great Circle lines ("straight" on a globe, shortest distance). This has caused some weird things to happen near the poles in the past. You can read more about this on hmm's blog over here and here. and of course: 3. DTF is almost always flawed. The shortest way to the finish (DTF) is almost never the fastest way to the finish. So DTF is almost always wrong in predicting who will most likely finish first, or who is leading the fleet. Most important is that DTF does not matter at all in a race like this. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
