Been watching my collection of Whitbread movies and VOR movies and am taking time to reflect of exactly how good sailors Sir Peter Blake and Conny van Rietschoten was... Masters... RIP to both.
Sir Peter Blake in particular was a genius when sailing was involved... Had goosebumps seeing the footage of him and Grant Dalton coming in 1st & 2nd into Auckland in that 89/90 Whitbread... that squall at the end... Tragic that some fool with greed as a motive cut short his life. We lost a great man indeed... I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not... |

Must admit that having watched a lot of footage of the VO70's in the southern ocean I'd rather do the voyage on Steinie2 if pressured to do so... She may be much slower than the modern breed of speed machines but she is way tougher I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not... |

I notice that there are no ice gates or southern latitude boundary that we must observe. I don't know if this was the case for the real race, but it is now for all around the world races. I am not necessarily advocating that we should have such limitations, but if realism is something we are striving for then it may very well be that the best virtual course for this leg would be sheer suicide in real life. Just a thought. I will be reinforcing Hirilondë's bow for ice breaking just in case.

Ice gates make a lot of sense IRL. Still, it is interesting to route without them in SOL.
Even so, I ended up setting up some gates. Not "ice" gates, actually, but points on the Antarctic Coast that I have to leave to starboard. Sanave 68 57.822s 000 35.645e Sor Mondane 01 69 16.394s 014 59.413e Sor Mondane 02 68 28.407s 033 32.456e Napier Mtns 65 58.389s 051 01.731e Please forgive the rather arbitrary naming of these points. Also, I have no clue as to whether using these WPs in a router will help or hurt the time to arrival at Fremantle. |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
