	Lots of info on the 'web about the race from Sydney to Auckland... On 10 October, at 0300UTC (1400EADT) the tall ships will sail out of Sydney Harbour at the conclusion of the Royal Australian Navy's Centennial celebrations and a magnificent Sydney Regatta to begin a truly challenging 1,140nm Tall Ships Race from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. The course includes the Tasman Sea, known locally as The Ditch, and notorious for the speed with which conditions can change, due to the confluence of the Southern and Pacific Oceans, where winds and currents combine in a formidable challenge. Sailonline is very happy to be the official virtual race partner for such an epic endeavour in association with Sail Training International. This time the game will include the complete fleet of tall ships on-screen. The pre-race practice phase at Sailonline will open soon - sailing a tall ship is a hard-won skill even for virtual sail-racers! Fair winds to all taking part, in reality and virtuality! 	Report on Tall Ships Series 2013 The Sailonline Tall Ships Series 2013 has been one of the high points of the year, starting with three races in the Baltic, followed by two races in the Mediterranean and finally, to cap it all, an extraordinary first ever tall ships race in the Southern Hemisphere, from Sydney to Auckland. During the course of our season, SOLers have sailed three tall ships (Full Rigger, 90m Barque and Clipper) a total of 2,481nm. The three Baltic races of The Tall Ships Races 2013 (July/August) were an excellent introduction to the season with the winds giving us a challenging time – particularly challenging was the first race from Denmark to Finland. In the real race, sadly, the conditions were too much for one vessel, Wyvern, that foundered with the loss of one life from among its rescuers - RIP Koen van Gogh, from Wylde Swan. The Cruise in Company race from Finland to Latvia appeared easy until the leading group just pulled away – apparently their technique was “"using the fact that this polar goes better upwind in less wind, so go for the light wind for tacking up." The third race from Latvia to the home port of sponsors Sczcecin in Poland saw the development of a new tactic– heaving to while waiting for light and fickle winds to move on through! A lesson to be remembered for the future, for sure. After a few weeks’ break, the tall ships focus moved to the Mediterranean with the first of the events sponsored by the new Sail Training International sponsor, Lycamobile. Two races here, from Barcelona to Toulon and then on to La Spezia. The first race from Spain to France was set against a counterpoint of AC72 racing off San Francisco, and as we steered our elegant tall ships through the balmy and pleasant conditions of a late Mediterranean summer, the contrast could not have been stronger. Unusually for a tall ships race there were 17 finishers in the first 10 minutes – a very close run thing indeed! The second race from France’s historical naval base of Toulon to Italy’s La Spezia, hosting its first tall ships festival, was a slow affair – classic “blue gloop” (light wind arrows are blue in colour) and became a testament to perserverance! Then in October came a marvellous spectacle. During the course of the preceding 52 weeks tall ships from around the world had been making their way across the oceans to Australia and, following a series of festivals in major cities, they sailed on to Sydney and the Royal Australian Navy’s Centenary celebrations. At the conclusion of festivities, a small fleet of 7 tall ships then participated in the first ever Sydney to Auckland Tall Ships Regatta. Sailonline was again privileged to be associated with this event, and with the entire fleet on-screen, we could all see for ourselves the way in which the extraordinary weather conditions in The Ditch (the Tasman Sea) with winds gusting in excess of 35kts, affected the real vessels. Some retired, due to storm damage, but all made it safely to New Zealand and will be ready for the Auckland Tall Ships Festival starting on 25 October. SOLers too made it safely to the finish at the top of the Bay of Islands – some resolving never to sail a (virtual)Tall Ship again, others delighting in the insights it brings into the world of seafaring of years gone by and some even remembering short trips they have undertaken on real tall ships. This has been a remarkable season of tall ships sailing for Sailonline, so the three who have won through to take the series podium are to be truly congratulated on their dogged yet skilful performance – they are an example to all of us who wish to sail these beautiful ships as well as possible!
