My grandfather serviced the lighthouses on the West Coast of Canada during the age of sail boats. This series is based on what he may have done all those years ago.
The attached screen shot gives a taster of the series. It will be 10 races totally 1900nm. Some legs will be offshore, some through narrow channels. But they will pass all 50 lighthouses in British Columbia. |

A very interesting challenge would be to service the lights in the order of the SOLer's chosing. A maximum number of lights per leg and restricted port locations would be required. Probably difficult to set up, but very interesting all the same. One for the future perhaps.

That's certainly a interesting concept. We have a similar race here in Holland. Its a 24h race and you are allowed to sail your own route around a great number of marks. The goal is to make the most miles in 24h's but you are not allowed to sail the same leg multiple times.
It turns out to be a real puzzle race. Unfortunately at this point such a race is not possible on the server side. But the race is a challenge even if we make it a normal fleet-race. --- Last Edited by Jeroen Tiel at 2013-02-01 09:25:37 --- I provide feedback and am admin of Sailonline.

Hi NZL Scotsman - I will be setting up the first leg of your 10-leg BC Lighthouses Series to run next weekend... once it is set up we can decide if we want it to run as a TIMED or a traditional fleet race.

The SECOND leg of this series is now set up and ready for preview. It will be raced as a timed race but for preview purposes, of course, it has to be set up as a fleet race (we adjust that just before opening the race).
To preview the course (I suspect you may want to adjust a waypoint or two to optimise rhumbline) just log in as the sol boat: USERNAME: sol PASSWORD: sol and then click here Please note that for this race I have used nam_awip wx so it is higher resolution. Let me know what you would like to see adjusted, if anything! |

I have checked the kmz and it says Active Pass, as does GE, rather than Active Point or Access Pass (altthough if you zoom in, there is also Lighthouse Point).
It is therefore now changed to Active Pass. I wonder if there is a particular story to go with that light - there's no conventional reason for either of us to have made up or mistaken the name... in all the years of setting up races I have misspelled but never made up a waypoint! _____________ --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2013-04-22 09:35:11 --- |

Marstrand to Cowes 2025
We invite you to another race, which will kick off the third quarter of our ARCH series. We'll set off from Marstrand, Sweden, which, along with Skagen, Denmark, marks the line commonly recognised as the border separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The 650nm route will take our Ripitide 50 across the North Sea and the English Channel to Cowes, England. Watch out for the fast ferries crossing the Channel from Calais to Dover 😊.

Nantucket Sprint 2025
Welcome to Nantucket, from whence Herman Melville’s Cap’n Ahab sailed round The Horn into the northern Pacific Ocean to hunt the gray whale - whose migrations are celebrated elsewhere in SOL’s Q4 schedule - he never to return. And whaling too, as the 19th C progressed, like Ahab disappeared from Nantucket as the harbour silted up and mainland Massachusetts whaling stations benefited from rail connections. But beach life, yachting and nostalgia has rescued the island from oblivion, so to celebrate leisure, SOL gives you the Nantucket Sprint - 25nm in 29er_XX’s from east of Tuckernuck Island across the sound to a finish just inside the mouth of the harbour. Aland Sea TIMED Race
Norrtalje Segelsallskap, 70km NE of Stockholm was founded in 1920, and time was when the society’s season opened with a challenging offshore race from the club line off Flaten island at the mouth of the long and narrow Norrtaljeviken, out onto a triangular course around the Aland Sea, to finish at Simpnas slightly to the north on Bjorko island - some 78nm in total. A fine race that SOL, being from these parts, ran annually up until 2013. Last run in autumn 2018, we return here to race the course again in the form a TIMED RUN in spanking new Club Swan 50s.
