Congratulations to our first podium in this year's race -First Jepsom (Sweden) in 37h 3m 2s, Second Do-Pig (France) in 37h 3m 46s and Third,rafa (Peru) in 37h 5m 28s!!

UPDATE:19feb11:2320utc: Nearly 24hrs into the race and Open Country is maintaining her lead over the SOL fleet - but we should all be in Mangonui this time tomorrow!! There is a 24hr stopover allowed in the real race and it has been agreed with SSANZ that they will advise SOL of the start-time for the next Leg so that SOL will be able to start at the same time again.

Please note that this means Leg 1 of the SOL race will close 2 hours before the start of Leg 2.

UPDATE:19feb11:0030utc: All SOL boats are towed back and last minute course corrections are being plotted, @OpenCountry is stooging around in our general area - the tracker working perfectly. A quick check on the SpiderTracks page gives choices of view - satellite, terrain or map. SOLers can, of course, download a Google Earth overlay from the Races homepage link to follow the race there. Gotta love 21st century technology - nearly 400 boats from all around the globe (and at least 50 from New Zealand) are about to sail "alongside" the real RNI racers. Can virtual sailing get much better??!!!

UPDATE:18feb11:1610utc: RACE DAY!!!! It is 0510hrs in Auckland on Race Day and, hopefully, all the IRL boats and their skippers will have had plenty of sleep in preparation for the challenges ahead.

The wx forecast for the Hauraki Gulf, once we get there, is for "Variable 5 knots. Northeast 10 knots developing early afternoon then becoming southwest 10 knots tonight. Smooth sea becoming slight early afternoon, but choppy when wind opposes tide. Fine."

Remember to look for WairuaExpress's boat @OpenCountry in the Boats List and don't forget to check out the SSANZ website for all the latest race news and updates.

UPDATE:16feb11:2318utc: Excellent news! The SOLgods and SpiderTracks have worked transglobal magic and now WairuaExpress's boat Open Country, which will be racing the RNI in reality, is visible on our SOL race screens. Look for @OpenCountry under the Boats Tab. Practice racing has just completed the second pre-race-race and several SOLers can now be found at NZL_yachtyakka's beach which is the unofficial HQ of SOL's practice racers!!

UPDATE:16feb11:1000utc: With registration open and practice racing underway the countdown continues! All racers should note that each leg of the SOL race will close 1.5hrs before the start of each subsequent leg. Legs of both the SOL race and the RNI in reality will start at the same time.

UPDATE: 15feb11: Are you ready? With just days to go until this years running of New Zealand's Round North Island Race on SOL, the final preparations are being made for opening race practice.

SOL is delighted to announce that this year, for the first time, our race will be run in direct association with SSANZ and is looking forward to welcoming to the SOL race, those associated with the race but not able to sail it in reality! SSANZ has offered to provide SOL with the start-times of the real race-legs, so that we will be competing as closely as is virtually possible with the real yachts.

SOLer WairuaExpress will be sailing his boat, Open Country, in the SSANZ race and not only will we be able to track his progress here but SOL is also working to have OpenCountry appear on the race screen.

The race will start from Devonport Whart, Auckland, at 0100utc on 19 February 2011, and in all will comprise four legs:

Leg 1 Auckland to Mangonui
Leg 2 Mangonui to Wellington
Leg 3 Wellington to Napier
Leg 4 Napier to Auckland
